UTI with abdo cramps

10 days ago I was seen in the assessment unit because I had severe cramping over my bump. I was diagnosed with an UTI. I was prescribed a course of antibiotics. At the time I didn't have any of the classic UTI symptoms, but by day 5 of the course I had them all.

I finished the course on Tuesday. I saw the midwife for my 25 week appointment on Weds who sent a sample off to the lab. By Thursday I was worse, so saw the GP. Urine still showing an UTI, but he decided to prescribe me the same antibiotics that I'd be given last week.

Roll on today, the symptoms are just getting worse, I am in agony with cramps across my lower abdo, I've got pain in the upper right side of my abdo. My back aches and to top it all off, I feel like I'm sat on a red hot fence post. So I phoned the assessment unit again, was told to come in. The first midwife was lovely, told me she isn't surprised that I'm not better, if the first course didn't work then the second course of exactly the same drug was never going to. My urine is still showing an infection.

Unfortunately that's when it went downhill. I've now been discharged, told to continue with the course I have and see my GP on Weds if it's no better.

I have a history of serious UTI'S that have resulted in kidney infections, I've been hospitalised several times for IV antibiotics because it's quite usual for me to not respond to oral antibiotics. And now I've just broken down in tears in Tesco because the prescription they gave me for buscopan can't be excepted by anyone other than the outpatient pharmacy, which is closed until Monday.

I'm at a loss as to what to do now. I'm in a lot of pain, paracetamol just doesn't cut it. I'm exhausted and constantly feel like I'm about to wet myself. I know it's going to get worse and I'm worried about the complications of it spreading to my kidneys. I'm 25+4 today. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You really should go back to the hospital. It sounds like you need admitting so they can monitor your baby, and you need some different antibiotics.

A&E I think. Sorry I know it will be a right pain but a kidney infection in pregnancy can be really serious and you may need intravenous antibiotics.

Yep, you sound like you need to be in hospital on IV to stop your kidneys getting damaged.

I don't know why they sent you home after admitting that you wouldn't respond to the same antibiotic.

I got 3 UTIs in a row at 16, 17 & then 19 weeks and eventually my gp put me on a different antibiotic followed by a long term low dose of that same antibiotic until 32 weeks at the instruction of a private consultant. Neither A&E or triage would admit for IV, but fortunately the antibiotics always reduced the symptoms while I was on them, it was just the UTI kept returning.

If the antibiotics aren't even helping your symptoms then they are the wrong ones.

Demand and go back to a&e or get ur oh to call an ambulance they have no choice to admit you then. Im suprised they havent sent ur water sample off to the lab to see what antis will work. Im like you been in hospital more times than i have at home in my whole life due to kidneys and utis. And i am immune to most of the antibiotics. I get well stroppy when the nurses try and tell me different as its been my whole life i knkw more than anybody whats going to work! X

Also your health profession be it your doc or a specialist consultant should have put you onto a propholactic if you have a major history like me. My urologist instructed my doc to if i got a uti throughout my pregnancy and now i am on one. If you or your babys health is affected by this then you have ground to sue the arses off them! I would if i was in your position but then again i wouldnt have accepted being discharged and wouldnt have left until id spoken to someone higher up!

I just wasn't impressed today.. I'm normally quite good with confrontation but I was ushered out the door so quickly I just left in a total haze.

When I was in last time, they listened to the baby, did an internal exam, and even did a quick ultrasound. Today I just had my temperature taken, they didn't check anything else. I've had 3 samples sent to the lab since Weds, but the results aren't back yet.

I work for the NHS so I know what should and shouldn't happen. But today I just feel let down.

Really feel for you, I know how bad uti and kidney infections can be.
I'm a renal patient stage 3 but don't have many symptoms thank God, I've also been told that I will need to go on low dose anti bio. if I get an uti this pregnancy.
You need to see someone who gets this sorted quick as possible, before it travels up your kidneys, which is dangerous for pregnancy.

Thanks for all your replies. I went back into the hospital today, they agreed to change my antibiotics and have now referred me for a kidney scan. Fingers crossed I will start to feel better now, I feel like I've been transported back into the first trimester with my several naps a day!
