Can't believe it - CVS and cardiac scan

Over the Easter period I had a 12 week scan where we told that baby at nuchal translucency measurement of 11mm. We were devastated and I prepared myself for the worst as baby was given a 10% chance of being born healthy.

The day after the 12 week scan I was at Kings College having a CVS. They measured the nuchal translucency as 8mm. A reduction but still of the scale. 4 days later we were told that the CVS did not detect a chromosomal disorder so we were booked in for a cardiac scan.

The cardiac scan was last week and again the consultant said everything was fine. She did say there were some things you might not spot at 16 weeks. Whilst at Kings we were also told that the rest of the CVS results were back and they were all clear so we're booked in for a second caricature scan as well as the anomaly scan.

Despite all the good news I am struggling to believe that the baby will be healthy. I had prepared myself for the worst as it was my way of coping but now I'm meant to be all positive. Two extremes.

I haven't found any other positive stories where the nuchal translucency measurement was so high.

That's brilliant news. You must be feeling completely shell shocked by the extremes of emotion though, sounds like a roller coaster ride. I hope the news continues to be good at your next scans. Smile

what did they say at kings re: 8mm? sounds like you've had all the bad things ruled out so that has got to be good right?;. I had 2 CVS at Kings, they know their stuff, are they telling you everything can be normal with 8mm? hope so x

Hi there, I have no experience of high NT measurements or CVS but I do have lots and lots of experience of Kings. I am on my second high risk pregnancy under them and they are fantastic. I know it's hard to believe that everything now looks ok but if they say it is then you can be pretty sure that it is. They are unbelieveably thorough, and also very cautious, so wouldn't have told you to be positive if they had doubts. They are one of the leading research hospitals in the world for foetal medicine so you are in safe hands. Hope you continue to get good news

:)

Looks like you're the lucky 10%.

But what a stressful time!

I know what you mean about not being able to just shrug aside the nagging feeling that something must be wrong.

Just after my 12 week scan (in the half hour when we hadn't been told there was anything to worry about) I felt quite blissful and excited. Then slapped with the news there were various indicators they were unhappy with. And despite being given all clear on harmony test, CVS, cardiac scan, and anomaly scan, I couldn't shake that worry that something was wrong, that they hadn't picked up something they should have done or they weren't telling me something.

Just shy of 30 weeks now and only just in the last week or so can I really say I've felt excited again.

I've been at Kings too and they have been great - as well as the excellent consultants, the midwives there know their stuff and are at the other end of the phone if you just need to ask a few questions to help settle your worries.

But in the circumstances I think it's natural to feel the way you do, it's certainly how I felt.

Wishing you a very healthy pregnancy Thanks

I had to have a cardiac scan at 23w with dd. I remember how stressful it felt and also a bit unreal. She's snoring away upstairs cuddling her bunny and completely healthy.

I hope things turn out well for your family - you're in my thoughts.

Last week, at the 20 week scan, the nuchal translucency was still measuring too large. We spoke with a genetic consultant who told us about the possible genetic conditions our baby could have. Heartbreakingly, we took the decision to end the pregnancy.

Prior to this I have had multiple miscarriages before 12 weeks so convincing my husband we should try again, at some stage, is going to be an up hill struggle.
