MONEY WORRIES DURING MATERNITY LEAVE

I'm 7 months pregnant with my first baby and am finding it the most wonderful experience ever. I'm thoroughly enjoyng my pregnancy and am so excited about the birth in Novemeber.

Only one thing is worrying me and that's how I'm going to cope financially when I'm off on maternity leave.

I stupidly got into debt a few years back but worked hard to get back on track. Everything was going well until I was unexpectedly made redundant from my job and had to take a post with a much lower salary.

My partner can take on the mortgage and the household bills for the 6 months I'm off but I'm going to struggle to meet my debt repayments.

I considered a consolidation loan but was turned down and am now beginning to wonder where to turn.

Anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice would be much appreciated as it's starting to keep me awake at night and I'm scared it'll affect baby.

Definitely contact the people your debts are with and let them know the score, maybe you could make an arrangement to make reduced payments for the duration of mat leave? The worst thing to do is to ignore it until the debts start mounting again . I know it's hard to do, but keep them informed. You have my sympathy!

That's really good advice and there's plenty more on moneysavingexpert.com - I'd trust that site more than most of the other debt advice/loan places. Am in a similar situation as you and going back to work 3 months after the birth. Best of luck

You will also get child benefit & may also qualify for child tax credits - not a fortune, but every little helps
