28 weeks and movements not as strong

Hi,

From 16-28 weeks my baby has been a very active boy. Kicking and punching my bladder and belly non stop to the point that I was starting to wish for a break.

Well I should have kept my thoughts away because since I turned 28 weeks (3 days ago) his movements have been getting less frequent and less forceful.

After a sleepless night of very little movement last night, I went to triage this morning for monitoring.

At first they struggled to find him (couldn't pick up heart rate or figure out where he was laying), but eventually they found him and his heart rate was normal at 140-150bpm.

You could hear him moving abit on the monitor, and then after a glass of ice cold water he went mad. I came home relieved, but since being back home I have barely felt him again, and am just thoroughly concerned about where he has gone and why I can't feel any kicks.

Has anyone had something similar happen... And did it turn out ok/go back to normal. I have a growth scan tomorrow, but am freaking so much I am trying to stop myself going back to triage this evening.

Hi, didn't want to leave you unanswered & was hoping someone else would as I'm one of the people for whom it didn't turn out ok & I don't want to make you worry. But the advice is always to get checked out if you're worried, even if you've just been checked. Seriously, they would rather see loads of women and check them in order to not miss that one where something actually is wrong. He's probably absolutely fine, but don't ignore your concerns just in case.
Have you had cold water and lie down since you came home btw? And why are you having a growth scan? (If there are concerns about growth it's even more important to take note of your concerns). Again, it's much more likely that you're worrying over nothing - but even so it is better to get checked again rather than worry all night anyway x

Thanks. I have a hematoma that hemorrhaged at 11+6 weeks. It stopped bleeding weeks ago but it can affect function of placenta and cause IUGR so they booked me in for 28 week growth scan.

He has moved a little this afternoon after water and lying on left side, but not much. However, I just knelt down with hips above my head and swayed them back and forth to encourage him to move and he has been moving much more since.

I'm really sorry you didn't have a happy ending and thank you for answering.

I will call triage again if he goes too quiet this evening.

boogles91. If you mean there are fewer movements, you need to be checked. If the movements are less vigorous, you need to be checked.

If the baby is squirming rather than actuall kicking, but ir doing so the same number of times and with the same level of vigour, that is probably OK.

But if you have the slightest doubt, go and get checked. MWs would rather see hundreds of women who weren't sure (IYSWIM) than miss one with problems who thought diminution of movements in later PG was normal.

I'm in the same situation as you OP, since week 27 baby has really calmed down. Went to assessment unit to get checked out, all was fine, then had a growth scan, all was fine there so I guess there are just days baby is bit more quite and other days more active.

Yes Heaven... It is nerve wracking though isn't it?

Growth scan was ok, but have follow up for 32 weeks to track.

Baby a little busier tonight so hoping he will continue tomorrow and give my nerves a rest.

I hope your bubs gives you some good jiggles soon x

Hi, Glad to hear he is a little livelier again. You completely did the right thing to go & get checked out and the fact he can be stimulated to move is a good thing.
At 28 weeks DS2 had stopped moving and at the hospital he was shown to be in severe distress, so - trust your instincts and get yourself checked out if you are in any doubt!
DS2 was delivered by emergency c section at 28 wks & was very poorly for a long while.
They really don't mind how often you go to be checked.
Sounds like all is well now but its good to highlight how important monitoring movements can be.

I think the movement became a bit less, but more pronounced (if that makes sense) around that time with my daughter.

I was under the care of an obstetrician throughout my pregnancy, and his advice was there should be at least 10 good movements a day and they should respond after a cold drink. Anything else, go get checked out.
