Overactive thyroid and Home Birth - anyone with experience?

I see threads almost daily about Underactive thyroid but none about overactive. Is there anyone else like me?

I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid/Grave's Disease in January. I'm 29 weeks pregnant now and seeing my Endocrinologist and Obstetric Consultant on a monthly basis. After a few months of unsatisfactory levels my medication has finally started working properly and my levels are where the doctors want them to be. Everything is fine with the baby. At a growth scan last week he was measuring slightly above average for the dates and is a wriggly wee brute Smile

My next appointment is to discuss whether or not my blood tests show the presence of antibodies. These antibodies can pass to the baby meaning they would need some monitoring/medication. The chance of this happening (as far as I can find out) is very small - 1%.

I had my first baby at home and want to do the same with this one. I hate hospitals and just know I will labour best at home. The jist from the doctors seems to be that they'd advise me to give birth in hospital if these antibodies are present but when pushed the only real reason they could give me was so the baby could have the medication it would need. Surely I could just take the baby to the hospital or have this medication at home?

I have no plans to go blindly against medical advice but I also am not the type to just do what I'm told without there being a strong case for it.

Does anyone have any experience or advice?

Finally someone the same as me! I have graves too, first pregnancy though. Unless your level GO super high or drop low I don't see any reason why you cannot have a home birth, unless they would want to do blood work on the baby so I would talk to your midwife and other consultants.

Thanks Gemini Smile

They're well aware of my strong desire to have a HB - I bring it up at every appointment! Each time they've said to wait till we know if the antibodies are present before we discuss it. I'm just getting a wee bit impatient and starting to think about the birth as a realistic and imminent event now that I'm almost 30 weeks!

When were you diagnosed? What medication are you on?

I'm on PTU (Propylthyouracil). It was 200mg a day but since last week it's been reduced to 100mg. The doctors have assured me that it'll be fine to breastfeed on that dosage - another thing I'm adamant about!

Found out 16 pcos then 19 graves.Well I'm one of those uber special cases. I was on camibzole before stopped due to side effects for a year. Due to a set of weird circumstances I end up in a& e having blood work and they tell me I'm advancely pregnant big for a scan and find out I'm 12 weeks pregnant. I'm now 32 4 days. Seeing consultants and they've said all is well expect for gestational diabetes.
