When should I stop sleeping on my front?

Pre pregnancy I usually slept on my belly. I carried on for a while after I readthat it can help get a retroverted uterus to flip into the right position (I had a retroverted uterus according to an early scan). Now I'm 13 + 4 presumably my uterus is fine now as the sonographer didn't comment.
So when should I stop?

When you are uncomfortable?

flipchart · 06/05/2014 08:45

So I posted too soon, but that was he advice I was given, my body let me know the best position to sleep.

There will come a point when you just can't sleep on your front. It will be obvious.

After I gave birth, one of the first things I did was leap into bed and lie on my front Grin

it's starting to feel slightly uncomfortable so I just make sure my weight isn't on the lower part of my belly. So its not bad for baby or anything until I've got a bigger bump?

Yeah, you'll know! 21 weeks and I used to worry "how will I make sure I sleep on my side?" ... simple answer, when it feels weird sleeping on my back/front. I only have a small bump but still prop myself with pillows, as rolling over is no longer comfy at all.

I'm 17 weeks and asked my midwife about this last week. She said the same as others have mentioned here -- you'll know when you get too big. I still sleep on my side a bit and don't worry about it, since she said it was fine. (And I don't feel uncomfortable yet.)

PotteringAlong · 06/05/2014 16:41

I'm 23 weeks and have only just stopped. Whenever you're too uncomfortable to is fine!

DuckeyP · 06/05/2014 18:56

Enjoy it while you can, I sooooo miss sleeping on my side!

I stopped too soon thinking that it would harm baby in some way. It totally won't, whatever is comfortable is fine.

I still tend to lean on my belly now to be honest, and i have to prop my top half up with a pillow otherwise i roll over onto my belly lol

oops, that should say I miss sleeping on my front!

Certainly won't miss sleeping on my side, what with the leg/hip aches!

beccajoh · 06/05/2014 18:57

When it gets uncomfy.

moggle · 06/05/2014 19:05

Duckey I nearly cried when I read your message - I know we're not supposed to sleep on our back or tummy, then suddenly thought we're not allowed to sleep on our side either?! What's left!! Glad it was a typo!

hobbjobb · 06/05/2014 19:05

I'm 37 weeks and cannnot wait to sleep on my front again! Don't worry about it, sleep on your front until it gets uncomfortable the baby is well padded

alita7 · 06/05/2014 19:08

I still sleep on my front (19 weeks)… I presume my body will let me know when it's no longer a good idea!

GingerRodgers · 06/05/2014 19:24

22 weeks and still sleeping (mostly) on my front. Enjoying it while it lasts as even after baby is born I know I might not be able to. My boobs were so massive and engorged with dd that for months after I had to sleep on my back, even laying on my side killed Sad

moggle · 06/05/2014 22:13

alita back is only later when bump is heavy- it presses on a big blood vessel in your abdomen and can make you feel dizzy or lightheaded. But, like the tummy, you will feel dizzy and wake up / move long before it's a risk to the baby.

Boogles91 · 07/05/2014 00:08

I could until about 18wks, where i would be half n half if you see what i mean. I put a pillow under ma belly and piled a couple of cushions for ma leg to rest on. I am sooooo looking forward to being able to sleep in my fav position again! I hate sleepin being only able to sleep on me back proped up slightly or on me sides -.- though the other night i kinda slept on me tum....very bruised the next day! I dint mean to just kinda rolled in ma sleep so now i have a giant teddy bear to stop me from rolling x

DuckeyP · 08/05/2014 12:03

Lol moggle! Sometimes it does feel like that what with the leg aches and hip pains, it makes me wish I could sleep stood up! >.<

I am just over 20 weeks and keep waking myself up rolling over from side to side, sleeping on my front, my back - I can only get comfy for a few minutes at a time. It's exhausting.

I have an increasingly large bump and can still position myself so that I can sleep on my front for at least a bit before I need to move again. And when I do move it's not because it hurts but because I'm restless! I suppose I need to get to used to a disrupted night's sleep anyway....

HomeIsWhereTheGinIs · 08/05/2014 19:15

I'm 31 weeks and still sleeping on my sides and back. It's a myth that there is a particular position that is better or worse for the baby. Your body will wake you up if something is wrong. For example, if you're on your back and the baby starts lying on your main veins, you'll feel faint and be woken up. If you're sleeping well, you're fine so keep at it! As everyone else has said, you'll know when you should stop sleeping on your tummy because it'll just be uncomfortable!
