Pregnancy pillows

I generally sleep on my side (either, and swap between them). I'm 23 weeks pregnant with a fairly modest bump and I've started feeling increasingly uncomfortable. I'm wondering whether a banana/wedge shaped pillow would help. Does anyone have any experience of them?

I just use a normal pillow between my legs and then sometimes a rolled up t shirt under my bump. It's worked brilliantly! No more hip pain :) didn't want to spend money on a pregnancy pillow.

I've just ordered one off amazon .. its just an orthopedic one cause that's what I used in my last pregnancy and it did the trick. I can't quite remember how I positioned it though... i'd have to report back!

Thanks, I might try a normal pillow first then. I had a cushion last night but it was just a bit too hard.

I used a pillow between my knees, and one under my bump last pregnancy. As I got bigger I then needed one behind my back too.

I am just over 8 weeks at the moment and already need the ones between knees and under stomach (which is flabby from last time). I think it is the relaxin causing hip pain rather than the weight of any bump.

squizita · 06/05/2014 10:43

Yeah my hip pain started before I showed at all, think it's the muscles. I am 21 weeks, small neat bump (she says now! Early days!).

I have a £3.99 'sausage' shaped pillow from Ikea along my back, a small round cushion between my knees and an owl-shape one (the shape fits under the bump), all found round my house.

My dh bought me one and it was a godsend and I still use it for feeding. I would definitely recommend one!

crazykat · 06/05/2014 11:09

I tried a wedge when I was having my first dc and it was really uncomfortable, as was the curved pillow.

I just bought a thick single quilt and used that as it was much more flexible so I could tuck it under my bump and between my knees as much or little as needed.

polkadotdelight · 06/05/2014 18:39

I have a mothercare one. Its narrower than a normal pillow but about 6 foot long and sectioned into 3 pieces. I have one part under head, one under bump and the last bit between my knees or i can make it a 'C' shape and have the middle supporting my back instead of belly - if I lean back against it it feels like Im sleeping on my back. Hip pain frequently wakes me no matter what I do.

AuntieMaggie · 06/05/2014 18:47

I have a v shaped one but think seperate ones are the way to go though I use the v one some nights to prop myself up sideways when I have heartburn in the night

The problem is everytime you turn over you need to move them!

Spare duvet is a good idea - I've done that by accident on nights I've been too hot

redandchecker · 06/05/2014 18:48

I have the wedge one - it's about 12 quid and it does help

Balderdabble · 06/05/2014 19:04

I tried with regular pillows for a while but still wasn't that comfy and then spent weeks umming and ahhing about whether a pregnancy pillow would be worth the money. In the end (possibly because he was bored of the conversation) my DH just said it was more than worth it for a decent nights sleep so I bought the dream genie. I love it and can't get comfy without it now. Sits just right under my bump and between my knees. Plus it will work for a feeding pillow when bub gets here. I do miss a proper cuddle when half asleep in the night tho cos it's in the way! Smile

HopefulHamster · 06/05/2014 19:05

I just bought a v-shaped one from Ikea for £7.50

polkadotdelight · 06/05/2014 19:45

DH was the one that made me buy mine too. He wasn't getting much sleep either!

Casmama · 06/05/2014 21:29

I got this very early on and it's great but it does take up quite a lot of space- we have a king sized bed and it's probably just as well otherwise dh my have got pushed out!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 07/05/2014 19:44

Currently in a double bed so not much spare room. Have bought this today cheap twin pack from Argos

Thanks for all the replies by the way. If I don't get any joy over the next couple of nights, I might branch out into something fancier.

I tried getting on with just a normal pillow between the knees and a small pillow supporting bump, but started getting really bad pain in the night. I caved and bought this at 35 weeks and in the week since I've felt so much better! It's big, but not overly so, and as I'm lying on it it doesn't really take up much room. And there's me, my H, and our 33kg dog in this double bed. (Trust me, we've tried to kick the dog out)

Isabelle76 · 08/05/2014 10:38

I also sleep on my sides and switch between them. I'm so hot at night so I usually stuff the duvet between my legs instead of a pillow and it works out ok. I also have a maternity slide sheet that helps with switching sides (I have pretty bad PGP) and I recommend it.

beckiebee04 · 08/05/2014 18:52

I got mine from asda n it's a life saver as well as multi purpose

babynugget · 08/05/2014 20:19

I'm just 15 weeks but was sleeping terribly and kept waking up on my tummy. I bought the dreamgenii pillow (got it for £30 on ebay). It's really neat and takes up very little room. It encourages you to sleep on your left which is meant to be the optimum position. The first night I used it I slept right through the night for the first time in weeks.
