Hi, just after some advice. I have had a cracking headache all day and really could do with taking some paracetamol to try and help me sleep. Am I allowed paracetamol? The other question is I have awful hay fever (which I think is causing headaches too) so can i take anti-histamine! So much advice everywhere but quite a lot contradicts itself. I am 9.5 weeks into my pregnancy. Many thanks in advance

Paracetamol is fine in, but it's usually advised to take as little as possible.

Hayfever tablets you'd need to check with a pharmacist or GP, most are ok but there are a couple that aren't. There's always contradictions if you google, so best ask a professional!

Hope you feel better!

Paracetamol is completely safe.
Hayfever meds vary, ask to speak to a qualified pharmacist, they'll be able to sell you something but some aren't suitable.

Paracetamol is fine, just obviously stick within the guidelines and try not to use it too often.

For the hay fever I would try speak to your doctor and see if you can get a prescription, a) because pharmacists do not like to help pregnant women and will send you to your GP and b) because you'll get it for free with prescription.

AFAIK you can take loratadine, but best to avoid certirizine. I think there's advice against any A-Hs in later pregnancy because it might make the baby drowsy in labour. The NHS website is pretty good for these sorts of questions.

couple of pieces of advice.

  1. find a reliable internet source such as the NHS and stick to that for medical information.

  2. whenever you are dealing with non prescription medicene the best rule I was given was to always check with the pharmacist before buying when pregnant.

End of the day we don't know your individual circumstances and potentially drugs might be fine for 90% of pregnant women but you could fall into the 10% who it isn't fine for. The pharmacist will know or be able to check any potential risks and personalise it a whole lot more..

:)
