C section will ruin my tattoo :(

I have a large tattoo that would definitely get destroyed if I had a c section. I've got really bad spd so a small chance but unlikely to have a c section.

I'm reluctant to speak to my midwife about how un manageable the pain in just incase her or my consultant start considering a c section. I would be upset to be left with a ruined tattoo and scar.

Obviously I wouldn't want a c section for lots of reasons, but that's been discussed many times before

Your tattoo will be of no consideration at all to them should you need an emergency C section.

Unfortunately this is the risk you take when you have ink. There is no part of your body safe from surgical intervention and no guarantee that a tatt will remain pristine.

In fact by the time age, collagen breakdown, possible stretch marks, chloasma etc have taken their toll, NO ink stays looking pristine. They all get a bit manky in the end.

And an inskperson who doesn't take PG and CS into account when liaising w/ a client about ink placement is a crap one and to be avoided.

MaryPoppinsBag · 05/05/2014 15:23

More important things to worry about than a blinking tattoo! The only thing that matters is the safe delivery of your your baby.

My C section scar is in my pubic hair line. You might be surprised how low down they actually go. You will barely even notice it care once your baby is here.

PotteringAlong · 05/05/2014 15:23

Oh for God's sake.

You're right. A picture you chose to have permanently inked on your body is far more important than the health of you and your child... Hmm

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 05/05/2014 15:24

Honestly, your baby and it's welfare will take priority over your tramp stamp in an emergency, for you, your midwife and your consultant/surgeon... If not, you might want to reconsider having a child, disfigurement comes with the territory Grin

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 05/05/2014 15:26

PS, women don't have a CS to control the pain, you just get on with that, a CS is for emergency medical reasons, not a pain relief option

EyelinerQueen · 05/05/2014 15:30

Why did you get a tattoo on your belly if you were ever going to consider having children? Confused

Even without a c-section the stretchmarks and fwibble left over from having a bump would always have meant it wouldn't remain in tact.

Anyway, tattoos are gross - safely delivered babies aren't. I know which I'd prioritise.

Firstpregnancy2014 · 05/05/2014 15:31

I don't think calling tattoos tramp stamps and gross is helping it's each to their own!
Despite not having any tattoos I understand what you mean about being worried but unfortunately it's unpreventable if a c-section is needed!
Good luck and hopefully you won't need one :) xx

alita7 · 05/05/2014 15:32

I understand where you're coming from- It seems to me that you'd have one if you needed one for the babies health, but that you would be very sad to ruin your tattoo. Which is reasonable, they cost a bomb and often people assign a lot of meaning to them. I don't want to loose my belly bar even though I'm hardly going to be able to show it off after birth :P Not much you can do I'm afraid except say that for many reasons you do not want a c section unless the you or the baby is at risk.

sonlypuppyfat · 05/05/2014 15:32

I'm sure the pregnancy will ruin the tattoo anyway . I had one on my tummy when I was 18 my DM said you will regret that, I did its split in two by a stretchmark!

5madthings · 05/05/2014 15:33

Your tattoo is likely to be ruined by pregnancy, my ffriend has a snake on her stomach similar to where a c section incision would be, she has had natural deliveries but the stretching of the skin in preg means the tattoo looks different t and stretch marks etc, I tthink she had it touched up after pregnancy? Or you could maybe?

Not much you can do about it!

alita7 · 05/05/2014 15:37

Eye liner- what a silly comment- the poster has not said she wouldn't prioritise her baby and of course you'd prioritise a baby over something you find gross...

There is no need to start telling people that tattoos are gross or tramp stamps at all- it's not your body, you have no right at all to judge as it affects you (or anyone except the person with the tattoo) in no way at all and judging someone based on it is totally narrow minded and ignorant.

I haven't got any tattoos because I have never been able to afford one and I can't decide on anything I like enough, but I sure as hell wouldn't stand for anyone judging me based on it if I did have one!

This is not a thread about whether or not people should get tattoos, this is about someone who already has one and if you have nothing helpful to say then don't comment!

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 05/05/2014 15:37

Oooh a snake with stretch marks - delightful!!

Salazar · 05/05/2014 15:39

Only option is to have all your babies and go back to a tattoo shop to see what they can salvage.

Kleptronic · 05/05/2014 15:39

People build self-identity in many different ways. For some people a tattoo is a part of their identity. There's nothing wrong in voicing a worry about the possible destruction of a tattoo through a c-section. It could, for the OP, also be a part of worrying about the major life changes having a baby entails, or fear of the birth.

I think it's quite negative to be deriding the OP's worries and choices, and don't understand why people want to sneer, unless being randomly mean on the internet is some kind of odd ego boost? Hmm. Who'd've thought it.

PurplePunkPrincess · 05/05/2014 15:43

I'm not talking about an emergency v section or as pain relief? What on earth made you think i considered it pain relief.

I could be offered a c section to avoid me damaging my hip.

I already feel that a c section is a massive deal with lots of negative reasons to avoid one. One of them being it could ruin a tattoo just to prevent some damage to my hip.

I'd like to be induced before going over due but worried if I ask for that they would also want to consider a c section

DebbieOfMaddox · 05/05/2014 15:46

Where exactly is your tattoo, if the whole large tattoo is going to be "ruined" by a c-section scar? A scar is normally just barely above the natural pubic hair line.

DebbieOfMaddox · 05/05/2014 15:47

If you are induced before going over then that in itself increases your chances of a c section.

PurplePunkPrincess · 05/05/2014 15:49

It's my third, it stayed perfect with the last 2 and is mostly under the bump so fingers crossed! I will probably have it touched up and brightened up in a few years Smile

PeachandRaspberry · 05/05/2014 15:50

Honestly- get over yourself.

It's a tattoo. You need your hips to walk. Don't fuck about with them for the sake of a tattoo.

It must be very, very low to be in the same place as a c-section scar anyway.

SecretSpy · 05/05/2014 15:51

Induction will increase the risk of needing a c-section - google 'cascade of intervention'

If you want to minimise the risk of needing a c section you may want to consider things like planning a homebirth, looking at one to one mw care, optimum positioning (spinning babies is a good website for this) but ultimately, if you need a section you might just have to sacrifice the tattoo.

You are absolutely right - there are lots of reasons to try to avoid a c-section if possible. However sometimes they are absolutely necessary and that's a risk we all take in childbirth. I could have declined my first C section TBH.

My daughter would be dead of course, but my skin would have been scar free Hmm

Heatherbell1978 · 05/05/2014 15:51

Lots of pretty harsh comments on here. I have 3 'tramp stamps' and erm, don't consider myself as a tramp in any way! How rude, each to their own.

As it happens I also have a tattoo to the side of my belly but honestly haven't even thought about the consequences of the pregnancy and if I get a c-section. I'll deal with it if and when I have to.

DebbieOfMaddox · 05/05/2014 15:52

Did you have SPD the last couple of times?

I think a lateral position is best for VB if you have SPD, but you need to be honest with your midwives about your pain levels or you could end up permanently disabled.

BonjourMinou · 05/05/2014 15:52

I was induced and ended up with an emergency section. If you end up on a drip to induce, apparently the likelihood of having a section is increased. Trust me, no one has a c-section to avoid pain, I was in agony afterwards. I can't see that you would have a tattoo that low down, anyway. Trust me, it's very, very, very low down - just skimming the top of the pubis.

Floggingmolly · 05/05/2014 15:55

You'd prefer to run the risk of damaging your hip than the appearance of your tattoo??? Hmm

GemmaPomPom · 05/05/2014 15:55

Oh, leave her alone everyone! Why do people feel they can be so judgey about people with tattoos?

OP, I feel for you and I don't have any tattoos. Maybe ask your midwife if the scar will be in the same place? I am sure she will be a bit more understanding than this lot on here Hmm
