Hello

I am a first time mum and am now 41wks and 2 days! I have been getting sharp shooting pains that feel like they're going up my bum, and they bloody hurt! Does anyone know what these are? They seem to mainly co-incide with when the baby moves quite hard, which for some reason at night it goes mad?!

Also I was given a sweep on Thursday (1 week overdue at this point), in the hope that it would bring labour on but it hasn't helped at all, apart from give me these shooting pains really badly Thurs night. I am booked in for an induction this Tuesday but after reading some peoples experiences online am realy worried now
Is Induction really that bad??!

the pains are probably just your lo hitting some nerves when they move - at 40+ weeks there will not be much room to move about and they will probably be hitting every tender point you have!!

I had a good induction. As I was 3cms dilated when I went in (after 2 sweeps that didnt work) I had my waters broken and the drip to speed up contractions. I had a tens machine, gas and air and one jab of diamorphine (like pethidine) and managed with that. I didnt find the birth that bad at all and thankfully it wasnt too long either - had dd within 8 hours of having my waters broken (which is quick for a first birth). My sister also had an induction that went really well so it doesnt always have a bad outcome. Good luck

jabbing feelings up my bottom was labour with DD, that is how I felt... like I was being poked with a knitting needle there (sorry if tmi!)

Yes I had those pains from 39 wks to the point where I could not move for a few seconds thought it was labour, but eventually was induced 14 days over! I had prostoglandin tablet at 11pm sunday, internally and left over night, BUT my waters broke within an hour and then contractions really kicked in!! 4 cm after 2 hours then had the epidural ahhhh the relief. fully dilated by 7.30am and ready to push at 10am , but stoped contractions and had to have drip which was horrible, made me vomit like you would not beleive and soooooooo gald I had the epidural cos this drip I have heard makes contractions very strong and painfull. DD was bon 10.24am via ventouse delivery and was fine. So my iduction was quick, but have heard other tales of woe.. so my advice is to have an epidural so no matter what happens , forceps cs ventouse episiotomy etc you feel nothing. Thats me but I am a wimp!! Good luck hope you go into labour naturally x

I had those sorts of pains, and they became contractions.... all very much in my bottom, though a very strong cramping sensation as well as shooting pains, and not across my bump at all. So... could be the start of things. No experience of induction I'm afraid, so can't help there. Good luck, and let us know how you're getting on.

I was induced, waters broke the day before but nothing happened. Drip was started at 6 and I had the epidural at 8. I couldn't have done it without the epidural cause I'm a big wimp. I was 9cm by 5 but dd was facing the wrong way so I had a section in the end. These pains can be felt during periods cramps as well, I get them every month. Doctor told me that the uterus contractions can push against the bowels causing cramps in your bum. Very painful. My friend's labour pains were all in her bum!

Hi there, I was induced and it really wasn't that bad. I was petrified on the day and have to admit to crying from the minute I woke up on the day! I was 1cm dilated when we arrived at the hospital and machine revealed I was contracting but not yet feeling it. I had a dose of gel and left to walk around for a few hours could then feel tightenings but no real pain. I eventually had my waters broken at 9pm and contractions really kicked in within an hour had a dose of pethidine at 11pm which was fab!! Slept on and off until about 2am pethidine had worn off and I coped quite well on gas and air until about 3.30/4am and then demanded an epidural! So they took me down to another ward eventually examined and was 9cm dilated and was told no epidural!! Was now about 4.45am and began pushing DS began to get distressed and was eventually given an episotomy and he was born at 5.31am.
After being absolutely petrified I can honestly say it was absolutely fine and actually feel very lucky to have had the birth I had. Good luck

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for all your tips and experiences, it has made me feel alot better already, but I know that I too will be crying probably from the minute I get up on induction day, infact I want to cry now if I'm perfectly honest!

I went for a long walk today with my BF and dog and can honestly say that when I came home I had really bad dull aches in my back and hips etc and really thought I was going to have contractions naturally, and they even came for a while every hour, then... nothing! Gone again, I really am starting to think that my mind is making it even later as I keep telling myself I can't do it, denial I think, don't think I even realise its a baby, just this annoyingly painful bump, how ungrateful does that sound. I am sat here as we speak with those flippin pains up my bot again and am just about to get in the bath in the hope that they go. I was going to call the hospital tonight to see if I could bring forward Tuesday as I don't feel like I can cope with this anymore, can you get depression before the baby comes? I think I may have it already, pregnancy can really get you down can't it.

Thanks again you guys, will keep in touch.
x

Listen Flash-you will be ok- as I said earlier i was 14 days late, but this was over xmas and new year, I kept asking the mw to start things off, but they wouldnt. I was totally fed up, thought I would never have a baby, just a thinkg inside tummy etc soooooo familiar-
Just remember tuesday is when it is all happening and you will have dd/ds within a few days, and beleive me you will come to miss the pregnancy..
Switch phones onto answerphone, so you do not have loads of calls "have you had it yet?"
"No F**K OFF and leave me alone"!!!!!
Everything will be ok promise. Thinking of you x

sansouci · 27/08/2006 22:45

Hi Flash! Reading your post brings it all back. It seems awful but it's actually wonderful & believe it or not, you will look back on this as a very special time! I didn't have a great time for my 1st because she wouldn't/couldn't "drop" but I remember that day as magical. Good luck & if you're not too keen on discomfort, go with the epidural. Let us know how you get on! xx

usandbump · 29/08/2006 07:15

Oh Flash my heart goes out to you, I know exactly how you are feeling. All I can say is it doesn't matter if you cry just sob it all out. Accept this is a really difficult time, talk to your BF and do your best to sleep the time away. I believe I was depressed during my pregnancy and worried myself sick about the birth and if I would continue to feel the same way when the baby arrived. The truth was the birth was fine and my baby is 6 wks old and never once have I felt the way I did when I was pregnant, the usual baby blues but that was nothing in comparison!

Thinking of you and wishing you lots of luck xxxx

lilymolly · 29/08/2006 08:56

Bumping to see how it all went Flash???

blessedchild · 13/09/2006 12:14

Hi all, I am 29 weeks. A few days ago, I felt those shooting pains up my rear, didnt know what it was and didnt spend time to find out. I have then at least once a week now. My midwife hasnt told me anything about shooting pains, but I knew that it may have something to do with labour. I will take it easy just in case.

I had this just after dd was born. Twas piles. If you are pg you should get your gp to prescibe you some haemerhoid cream so that you don't have to pay for it over the counter. It's well worth it, don't put up with the pain if you don't have to.

You can still take it easy though
