Just how bad was your diet? Can you make me feel less guilty?

We are lucky enough for this to be pregnancy no. 3 but I always have awful nausea, 24/7 nausea and this time is no exception.

All I can eat is chips, toast and marmalade, the odd egg and apples. My sickness lasts for at least 18 weeks.

I'm usually so healthy and fit and I'm quite worried what this crap diet will do to mine and the baby's health. I know the baby usually takes what it needs but daily chips?!

Can you cheer me up at all and make me feel less guilty?!

Thanks

Poor you! Mine was horrendous (sickness and diet!). I lived on "hangover" food, couldn't tolerate fruit or vegetables. Baby was and is extremely healthy, and I was too.

MrsMonkeyBear · 03/05/2014 16:50

For the first trimester I ate really badly, take aways most nights, fish finger sandwiches for lunch and toast for snacks. Once I got over feeling like I had been hit by a bus (about 3 weeks ago) my diet improved. Now managing fruit and veg again. Make sure you take your pregnancy vits and enjoy the chips for now.

With DC2 I had hyperemesis, and survived on full fat coke, dairy milk chocolate and M&S puttanesca pasta sauce (sometimes with pasta, but often just on its own) for about 20 weeks of my pregnancy. I needed hospital treatment for dehydration at points too, but DC2 is fine - probably healthier than his older brother - and was a good birth weight.

Currently pg (early days) with DC3 and the sickness is kicking in again. Although not as bad as last time, I have gone off all fruit and veg, and only really want toast and yoghurt. I'm not even trying to force myself to eat a balanced diet, I reckon anything is better than nothing.

Pre-pregnancy I had a pretty decent diet, so I'm also putting some faith in that.

Thanks - so appreciate the positive stories. Although I'm sorry for anyone who feels like me!

DH is appalled and cannot fathom why I can't force down broccoli :)

Anymore tales greatly appreciated - or tips!

I'm another one with awful sickness who ate what I fancied, when I fancied it! I remember BIL commenting that I shouldn't be eating a Chinese takeaway when pregnant to which DH replied 'she can eat what she wants, she will throw up in half an hour anyhow!' Haha!

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 03/05/2014 17:51

I suffered Hyperemesis too I survived the first 5 months on petit filous and Ribena (can't touch either now). Both ds's weighed in at a bonny 10lb and 11lb respectively.

Dr's always assured me that a foetus is merely a parasite who will suck all the goodness it needs out of you and the only person to suffer will be you (charming!)

notamonkeysuncle · 03/05/2014 17:52

Mostly creams cakes. I had terrible sickness until about 30 weeks so whatever went in mostly came out again. When the sickness stopped I improved my diet. DD was born weighing almost 9lb!

Sleepyhoglet · 03/05/2014 18:17

I just need to announce my excitement at finding decaff tea ! I didn't know it existed

oohdaddypig · 03/05/2014 18:23

See - normal tea makes me feel better. Is it sooooo bad?

I lived on toast and marmalade (and butter) for about 3 weeks, it was the only thing I could eat when I felt constantly nauseous.

bonbonpixie · 03/05/2014 18:53

I'm only about 12 weeks currently but recently my diet has been pretty rubbish. 'Hangover' food is a fantastic way of describing it. I sent DH out the other night to get midnight take away food Blush
DD is 2 and 'eats' like a Queen. I can barely tolerate sitting next to her munching veggis. I'm hopefully getting round all the crap with daily smoothies, with all the good stuff, and loads of maple syrup so I can actually swallow it. It was the same the first time- couldn't have paid me to eat broccoli!

I find making some healthy soup and eating it with loads of yummy crusty bread and butter helps

Wishfulmakeupping · 03/05/2014 19:01

I lived off toast, jacket potatoes and cheese and macaroni cheese from 12 weeks onwards when the acid reflux started :( dd didn't seem to mind and she's a very happy 15 month old who is partial to a bit of toast :)

MrsGiraffe12 · 03/05/2014 19:57

With DC1 I lived off of beans on toast with grated cheese :-)

littlegreengloworm · 03/05/2014 20:05

Honestly, don't worry. Are you taking pregnacare or similar ? I wouldn't worry. The baby will get what they need.

squizita · 03/05/2014 20:46

I could only stomach crisps, toast and babybel for my 1st trimester. It sounds common (and I bet it's been the same over history), don't worry... they would have noticed by now if it caused problems.

AnyaKnowIt · 03/05/2014 20:48

Can't help with the sickness, but one of my cravings was chicken from KFC, chips and toast is way better then that!

mummy1973 · 03/05/2014 20:52

It is your bodies way of telling you you Need chips. Don't feel guilty. Pasties were my thing!

eurochick · 03/05/2014 20:57

I referred to it as my beige diet. Apart from a small amount of fruit, if it wasn't beige, I wasn't interested. Luckily it only lasted a few weeks for me. So many people seem to be similar that it can't do any harm.

oohdaddypig · 03/05/2014 21:35

glowworm (fab name btw) I am not taking the pregnacare as it makes my nausea a million times worse. Forcing down the folic acid and that is it!

I vomited tonight so slight relief!

I'm liking the thought I need chips. I can imagine why a body would crave them. anya at least KFC contains protein!

Does anyone think there is also a mental element to it too? If I stay really busy it definitely takes my mind off it.

Really appreciate your stories - thanks

I ate half a family sized cheesecake today... And some fried Brie! I'm 16 weeks and have thrown most days at least a few times so am yet to put any weight on so I figured I could do with some extra calories :)

IAmABam · 03/05/2014 21:52

I had constant nausea throughout my entire pregnancy. Some days I couldn't eat at all. On a 'good' day I managed a small bowl of Alpen or a ham sandwich & 2 packets of crisps. The only liquid I could stomach was full fat milk. I couldn't take the vitamins either. LO obviously got what she needed though.

mamicar · 03/05/2014 21:53

hyperemesis here. I lived on coke (the drink) pot noodles and haribo Shock

neversleepagain · 03/05/2014 21:58

For the first 16 weeks I survived on toast with Marmite all day. I then moved onto ice lollies, chips and curry sauce, wotsits and magnum ice creams.

My twins were born healthy at 34 weeks weighing nearly 11lb between them! I also only put on 18kgs eating all that junk!

I had hyperemesis and lived on Lucozade and various carb based foods that were thrown back up. The baby takes what it needs first. It's the only time in my life I have had brittle nails and spotty skin. Both of which cleared after the birth as normal eating resumed.

Try not to worry too much.
