Removing Amalgam Fillings...

I've been having what feels like never ending root canal treatment. The first time, the dentist took out my amalgam filling so he could start the root canal.

Now, I'm reading google (stupid idea), and panicking about the damage I could have done to the baby. I was about 10 weeks at the time, now 18 weeks (went back today for the second round).

So, has anyone else had these fillings removed during pregnancy?

Most of the journals I've read seem to say there's no proven risk, but then it makes me wonder why the NHS advise against removing them during pregnancy. (I don't live in the UK)

As far as I'm aware there is not enough risk from them to warrant removal (which in itself isn't a risk free procedure). There are far more risks out there that you are exposed to every day than your fillings. If the NHS isn't fussed, I wouldn't be.

As a dentist I wouldn't remove them while you were pregnant if there was no clinical need (eg if the patient though they were ugly and wanted white instead). But if you've needed treatment and one had to be removed, definitely I would. The risk is vanishingly small, less risky than lots of other things that you don't think twice about v
