Do the smell aversions go away?!

I'm currently 8 weeks and having pretty bad all day sickness, and everything smells horrible. Even normally nice smells like soap make me feel queasy. We've just moved to a new house, and the smell of the house makes me feel sick too. From anyone else's experience, does the aversion to certain smells go away with the morning sickness? Bit worried the new house is always going to have this effect!

Of me the smell sensitivity went away more quickly than the sickness (and I started to get some energy back at around the same time). The sickness is much easier to handle without the smell sensitivity and exhaustion.

Do just hang on in there. Everybody's experience is different, but something will start to get better at some point and it will really make a difference, just take it a week at a time. And don't forget if it gets too much your GP may be able to prescribe something, or the hyperemesis thread on here is really lovely and supportive even if you don't have full on HG. There is also a good website with lots of info if you Google "pregnancy sickness support".

Not for many weeks imo - till about 22. Sorry.
My worst was the fridge.
ugh the everyday smells of the fridge.

ouryve · 29/04/2014 12:42

Yes. About 8-9 months after conception.

Sorry.

hellymelly · 29/04/2014 12:43

No. Not for me anyway, i was very green all the way through if I caught a whiff of certain things. Printing ink on the Sunday papers, boiling rice, garlic, all sorts of things. And it was such a strong aversion that I still feel it slightly, seven years on! It isn't as strong, but the trigger smells still give me faint nausea. Or even the sight of something I wore whilst sick and pregant. In fact even the sight of a particular children's book that I read to Dd while the morning sickness was really grim, will still trigger a slight nausea.

GingerRodgers · 29/04/2014 12:45

Nope. Mine lasted all the way through pregnancy with dd, faded slightly after her birth and are now back with a vengeance in this pg.
Sorry.

DH's aftershave made me wretch. Shopping was a nightmare too - playing Russian roulette in supermarket as didn't know what smell was going to hit me.

It did improve for me but lasted about 16 weeks.

squizita · 29/04/2014 13:24

Mine have go better since about week 14. :).

Have friends who have never been able to smell garlic, coffee etc again though, even though their kids are 10 now! Shock

Emzar · 29/04/2014 14:44

Oh dear, I was hoping everyone would reassure me that they just disappeared, but it looks like it's hit and miss...

Thanks for the responses!

mine did go - but I also had an aversion to smells in my house, in the front room and another room (not the loo!), and the kitchen was a minefield. I had aversions to coffee, rosemary, curry, really weird strong smells that I normally love. BUT all went by about week 14.

neolara · 29/04/2014 15:55

Eventually. For a couple of weeks with each pregnancy, I found my dh smelt absolutely rank. Was a great relief when I stopped being so sensitive.

icklekid · 29/04/2014 16:19

Ohh we'll to be different sickness hasn't gone but smell aversions definitely did in the first few months!

LightTripper · 29/04/2014 16:36

My worst ones were anything musky. So yes OH and even myself taking clothes off at the end of the day (ugh) and had some sandalwood soap in the bathroom... I was so convinced something had died in there I made my OH go and look for it, and turned out it was the sandalwood!

ThursdayLast · 29/04/2014 16:37

Mine got better after the first trimester, so there is hope for sure!

Catsmamma · 29/04/2014 16:39

i am still weird about smells, but always was.

but being pregnant was just dreadful..i could smell all sorts of ridiculous things....the kettle going on was the worst, closely followed by the car being hot.

And I had to stop going places cos I knew they would smell funny.

WhispersOfWickedness · 29/04/2014 16:44

Mine got slightly better around 16 or so weeks but I still can't smell tile grout or pea and ham soup without feeling a little queasy! (Youngest DC is 2.8)

hubbahubster · 29/04/2014 16:45

Third tri here and still struggling with some smells. A lot of them aren't even unpleasant, they're just OVERWHELMING.

Kels13 · 29/04/2014 17:18

I'm 16 weeks and the smell of meat being cooked is still enough to send me to bed / toilet to be sick // and have to open every window in the house. Sorry... At least you know you're not alone!

DebH1975 · 29/04/2014 18:07

Mines went away around 14 weeks (same time as MS) .... Guess everyone is different though. Hope yours gets better soon.

Emzar · 29/04/2014 18:23

The worst is DP's beard oil. Luckily I've managed to use the sickness excuse to get him to stop using beard oil... might have to keep that one as a 'permanent aversion.' :)

I'm almost 33 weeks and most of my aversions to smells have got better, except cottage cheese! One of my colleagues eats it most days for lunch and I have it sit so far away from her as it makes me feel ill. Grim!

Sweetpea86 · 29/04/2014 19:18

Not untill I got home from giving birth lol sorry

I'm 14+2. Virtually all mine have gone. Broccoli is still a bit dodgy but everything else is back to normal.
