So I had a routine blood test to check for all the regular stuff and I've come back as borderline hypothyroid.

I'm a bit worried as proper thyroxine & T3 levels needed for brain development and also increased miscarriage risk. I've been started on meds to rectify. I'm concerned that I've been an undiagnosed hypothyroid for a while, whereas doctor thinks that it may be because baby is using up my T3/T4 stores.

Does anybody have any experience with hypothyroidism in pregnancy and would mind giving me some advice? Particularly if you just found out about it in pregnancy?

If it helps my levels are:
TSH 4.36 (0.40-4.40)
T3 4.83 (3.50-5.70)
Thyroxine 11.3 (8.0-18.0)

In pregnancy TSH should below 2.5 apparently.

JSinCY yeah pretty scary when you search about on Dr Google. Same as you though…I wasn't given much info just that I was hypothyroid and needed to start meds. So obviously turned to the internet and freaked out. Good luck for your scan.

Hazchem Hope you're feeling a bit better and hopefully you can get some good help next week. Let us know if you think your thyroid level was related when you get the result back. I can be a bit maudlin…is depression related to hypothyroidism then?

livingzuid I've been indulging in a few too many Big Macs! It's hard though because in my family my weight seems to be an open field for discussion: 'oh you're looking a bit heavy. Careful. You don't want the baby getting too big' etc. It is a complete pain in the arse and hard to hear the scorn when I say I've shoved a Big Mac down my face earlier in the day Grin

Humm will do although can't get into see my doctor for another 10 days! Yes depression can be a symptom of hypothyriodism. It was one of my symptoms. I was trying to work out if there was a reason for getting so fat and feeling so terrible about it. I ended up seeing a physiologist and she was saying when someone first presents with symptoms of depression they normally try to get the thyroid checked. Also you can feel the depression side of hypothyriodism when you are not at a clinical level.

I was overweight at the start of the pregnancy and seem to gain about a kilo every 3-4 weeks which depressed me. There are some ladies I know who are able to lose some excess weight whilst pregnant but if you're struggling with illness and food then honestly it's not something to worry about. The main thing is to eat what you can and keep fluids down. Chances are that you will only gain a little or even lose a bit if your choices are limited. The only fruit I can have, for example, is gala melon and I can forget about veggies. Although hmm my body has finally said no to the mcds thank god! Carbonara is the latest thing Grin

I had horrid depression. It was this low level bzzzzz is the only way to describe it. Everything was an effort. As soon as I was on medication it cleared up in a few days and six weeks later I was pregnant after trying for 2 years. The thyroid controls so much it is a bit eek when it goes.

Hazchem · 13/05/2014 09:56

The low level bzzzzz is such a good explanation. Not able to hear or think or feel properly.

Ah…so that could explain some things with me. Will be interesting to see what happens to my thyroid levels after pregnancy. I'm just trying not to be too hard on myself.

You haven't given yourself a dicky thyroid. It just happens.

Just thought I'd update as back from the doctors. Levels are perfect! .76 which is pretty amazing as 12 weeks ago they were 5.4!

I think I must have just been having a bad week but the GP said I was right to get it checked and if I am ever worried again to do the test.

I'm now waiting for the midwife to set up my first appointment. I should hear from her in the next two weeks. It will be good to meet her as she will be my named midwife. I hope she likes me :)

That's great Hazchem. Reassuring! It's amazing how quickly results seem to change.
