Tiny Bump?

I'm 29 weeks PG and everyone keeps saying how shocked they are that my bump is so small. I have a midwife appointment tomorrow so can speak to her and see if there's any problems. Should I expect to be referred for a growth scan? What do you think?

Only my experience but I got to 38/39/40 weeks and my bump never grew any bigger than that - you don't look unusually small to me? I think everyone has a bump size that's right for them. Your midwife will refer for extra scans if she's concerned. You look lovely and pregnant - enjoy!

RedPony · 28/04/2014 12:45

Thanks :) I don't think it helps that a few of our friends are also expecting and all of them are bigger than me and im due first! It doesn't bother me when people comment and I have been taking it as a compliment but have recently started to worry that he might be a bit small

Everyone carries their child differently. I have been told all weekend how neat I look, but this morning I was told I looked huge. You could voice your concerns at the next appointment.

Provided the information you are getting from your midwife indicates all is well, I would just nod and smile, and be a little bit happy that you are not having to hulk a huge bump around all the time.

RedCountryRoads · 28/04/2014 13:02

Is it your first? I'm 33 weeks now and people still say my bump looks small. Did you do a decent amount of exercise before?

This is a 30 week pic of my bump. My midwife measures the bump when I go and has no problem with it.
I suppose you can just ask if you're worried.

Looks like mine both times on due date. I never had a bump at all until 22 ish weeks

RedPony · 28/04/2014 13:08

Yes its my first. I didn't do a lot of exercise and didn't have very good stomache muscles either Blush but I was a size 8 and quite slim before falling PG. Out if interest how does your midwife measure your bump? I saw a different midwife last time and she had a feel before using the doppler but has written 22 cm in my notes. She must be good at guessing!

Being a size 8 before makes a huge difference i guess. :)
I'm a size 14 but always did loads of stomach crunches and kettle weights before.

The MW feels for the top of the bump and with a tape measure goes down to the bottom.
I've just measured myself at 33 weeks and my own measurements are 30cm.

weebairn · 28/04/2014 14:03

People just carry very differently.

I had a "small" bump last pregnancy (and nothing till after 20w) but delivered at 40+5 with a 6 lb 14 oz baby. No problems whatsoever. I measured a few cm below what I should right at the end, but didn't have a growth scan as the growth was steady throughout.

I was a size 8/10 pre-preg and did do quite a lot of weights and core work so perhaps that was some of it, but I think everyone is just different. Just getting a bump now for 2nd pregnancy at 18 weeks, so a couple of weeks ahead of last time. Lots of people told me you show right away the 2nd time, but we're all different!

Your bump looks lovely to me and there are lots of advantages to not getting too big. Don't think you have that much control over it though!

Jumblebee · 28/04/2014 14:19

I had a tiny bump, most people didn't know I was pregnant. But at every midwife appointment the midwife reassured me DD was doing just fine Smile I was also told I must have a pelvis the size of a bucket!

Rachie1986 · 28/04/2014 14:24

I had a small bump, all the way through. Was also told 2.5wks before due date there was "no way" baby would be on time as I hadn't dropped. I was told this by my dentist!

Dd born on due date, weighed a very respectable 7lb8 :-)

ChicaMomma · 28/04/2014 14:27

I didnt really get a visible bump until i was 30 weeks- it kind of 'sprung' overnight. Now i lament my tiny 28 week bump. (33 weeks now and feel HUGE) Mine was actually smaller than yours at your gestation- barely visible at all. I wouldnt worry about it at all. A friend of mine who is 8 weeks behind me has been bigger than me all along- yet both our babies are measuring bang on dates at every scan- so it is no indication of the size or health of the baby.

Molotov · 28/04/2014 14:36

To reassure you, my bump was small all the way through my pg with dd1. I didn't have a bump until I was 6m pg and looked relatively small until the birth. I needed a growth scan at 38w. All was fine and she was a perfectly average 7lb 5oz Smile

I was slim when I became pg and worked out before the pg. My abdominal muacles were strong. Also, with first pg, your muscles haven't been stretched before so are naturally tighter. I didn't have the same thing happen with dd2 and looked pg by about 18w Wink Smile

LightTripper · 28/04/2014 16:01

I am further along than you (a bit overdue!) but always looked smaller than people as pregnant as me throughout the pregnancy. In my case I put it down to being tall with wide hips, but who knows really! Got sent for a growth scan today as bump hadn't grown since last appointment and was 5cm behind dates, but according to sonography baby is at or above average on all measures and estimated weight 8lb5oz... So really bump size is only a very rough guide!

RedPony · 29/04/2014 19:15

Thanks all Smile i saw the midwife today and she was not concerned, said he's growing nicely and feels spot on for dates Smile

I'm 34 weeks and smaller than you, but DD is apparently (somehow!) around 6lb at the moment Shock. God knows how - I'm only 5ft3 and have a tiny frame as well, so I'm not sure how she's fitting in there!

Lol at your dentist Rachie Grin

ohthegoats · 29/04/2014 21:33

I'd be really happy with that at 29 weeks. Smaller the better in terms of balance, clothes, comfort etc I reckon. I'm only 18 weeks at the moment, but no bump to speak of - it feels hard when I lie down, but that's it.

FoodieMum3 · 29/04/2014 21:47

I don't think your bump is small. You're neat and slim yes but your bump is sort of spread in length (Im probably not making much sense).
Rather than a short round bump.

I carried very small on dd2.

Do you remember Kate middleton and her teeny tiny bump? Wasn't george 8 and a half pounds I think?

It really has no bearing on anything really, IMO.

bonzo77 · 29/04/2014 22:50

I was very small with both my pregnancies (your size when the babies came, but read on)... Enough to cause concern and to have growth scans. Ds1 was 5lb11 at 39 weeks, ds2 5lb3 at 35 weeks. With both it was the lack of fluid making me small really. Both boys really were fine. If your midwife is happy and baby's movements follow a pattern then id not worry.
