Sick of obsession with natural childbirth

Now 41+2 with dc3

Yet another sleepless night with pain and nausea. Yet they won't induce me early because natural is best.

I have big babies. My last birth was as natural as they come. In water with gas and air. I had a third degree tear and two hours of surgery. My blood pressure dropped dangerously low due to spinal block.

I have been refused a caeserean and early induction. This baby is big.

It's my fucking body and yet I'm being forced to endure day upon day of pain and increasing anxiety. Wish all the natural childbirth obsession would fuck right off.

Beg for a C section again. The NICE guidlines (if you're in england) state that you can request one and should be able to get one, seeing as your reasons are very valid. They do try to avoid it if they can, which I think is crap if you've already had a horrific birth. A bit late now probably. I wouldn't go through 'natural' labour again if someone paid me a £1,000,000!

Hope you at least go into labour early. It sounds horrible for you Thanks

TheOrchardKeeper · 28/04/2014 06:32

Is it worth complaining?

hotcrosshunny · 28/04/2014 06:34
Hmm

You had a third degree tear so I think you can get a c-section. I would ask on that basis - did you see a consultant?

TheOrchardKeeper · 28/04/2014 06:35

NICE guidelines

Here's the relevant bit:

Maternal request for CS: When a woman requests a CS because she has anxiety about childbirth, offer referral to a healthcare professional with expertise in providing perinatal mental health support to help her address her anxiety in a supportive manner. For women requesting a CS, if after discussion and offer of support (including perinatal mental health support for women with anxiety about childbirth), a vaginal birth is still not an acceptable option, offer a planned CS

I'm booked for induction Thursday. Planned episiotomy if it looks like I might tear again. Yes seen the consultant, she was adamant I should try for vaginal delivery as I healed well and it's nearly five years since last birth. I agreed with her but now I'm 9 days overdue, I'm scared.

Never been induced before

You are right and I am very surprised you haven't been listened too. Arm yourself with your rights and go back to them.

I would feel the same in your position

myitchybeaver · 28/04/2014 06:40

I completely agree with you.

peeapod · 28/04/2014 07:54

you need to ring and get an appointment with a consultant who will speak to you about all your options. not having access to a C is not all your options. Is your midwife helpful? she might be able to advocate for you.

Having an induction is more likely to end up in more interventions. You need to be made aware of all the risks in all your options and helped to decide the safest.

peeapod · 28/04/2014 07:55

point out to your consultant that having an induction and an episitotomy is hardly "natural childbirth"

I had my baby last week and although it's kind of all forgotten now labour wasn't a pleasnet experince. They give me pethadine first which didn't help just made me dizzy didn't help with pain. While waiting for an epidural surpisly didn't ask for it they give me gas and air which made me throw up all over. The epidural failed so ended up having a spinal block, then and second epadurial. 20 hours later baby's got distressed and ended up having an emergency c section.

My birth plan was gas and air and water birth.

I'm so scared if I have another baby in future to go through that again. Although I'm in agony with section I would just perfur to have a section booked and go in that day to have baby.rather then have them pro long labour as much as possible.

A tear that bad I thought you would be able to request a section.

Women are constantly made to feel like birth should be natural. My mum pointed out even queen victora had pain relief lol I'm sure if women had the option 100s of years go they would of too.

I really feel for you I to had sleepless nights worrying about birth and that was with no previous experince I hope you get it sorted and feel more positive.

TKKW · 28/04/2014 12:07

yes, its all shite. having had zero pain relief with DC1, i feel i'm in a position to comment.
I was refused a CSection. Dreading a v- delivery and want every drug I can have to make this more painful. I know Csection isnt a walk in the park but in other countries i understand it is becoming more prevalent.

Im left with a higher likelihood of later in life pelvic floor damage and excruciating pain before, during after delivery. Great fun but at least we get a beautiful baby after it.

TKKW · 28/04/2014 12:09

I actually cant believe you were refused a c section after your injuries. Hope it all goes well.
I obv. meant less painful!!!

One thing I find worrying is that charities/organisations 'for' women tend to push for natural birth as best and view alternatives as inherently bad bar some lip service 'some women need a ceserain or epudural' (with the subtext BUT NOT US/ANYONE WHO GOES TO OUR CLASSES). There's this myth that if you do hypnobirthing and read Ina May it 'should' go natural and that is better. I wonder the psychological damage (as well as physical) for women who have been sold an idealised version.

It all seems so political: like targets, sides and how they will be 'seen' by certain people is more important than the patient.
