I am worried that I need to take 4 hour flight next week. Is it dangerous for early pregnancy? Should I cancel it all?

Should be absolutely fine! most airlines fly healthy pregnant women till 28-30 weeks!

hulababy · 25/08/2006 07:49

No it is fine. I flew at 9 weeks. Infact it was the only place (on the plane, in the air) where I didn't suffer from sickness!

CarolinaMoon · 25/08/2006 08:08

you'll be fine, honestly.

beware of travel sickness though, and of course take plenty of water and something to eat (if you feel as ravenous as I did when pg).

gingergirl · 25/08/2006 08:43

Don't worry, I flew at the same stage in pregnancy with no problem. If you feel the need for further reassurance contact your GP.

As the others have said, nothing to worry about. I flew about 8 times during the first trimester, from literally 3 days after conceiving. Just make sure you have a good seat if you're going to the loo all the time and as CarolinaMoon says, plenty of snacks in case of that sudden 'I will eat the nearest passenger if I don't get a snack NOW' syndrome.

DD was conceived in Australia so I made a very long flight back to UK in very early pregnancy stage. Fortunately I didn't have any sickness. When I got back I couldn't understand why jet lag was lasting so long!

When I was a Hostie, you could continue to work up to 12 weeks pregnant! A friend of mine did - up to 4 short haul flights a day (she must have been mad!!And knackered!!)

shhhh · 25/08/2006 15:08

never thought about air hostesses being pregnant..! LOL thats prob why I have never seen one..!!

So they are only able to work upto 12 weeks....then what..? Just interested thats all..!!!

bettythebuilder · 25/08/2006 17:21

now, I think you stop flying as soon as you know you are pg, and work on the ground, ie in the office. This does mean that you have to tell people pretty early on, tho'.

When my friend was pg, I think by keeping flying instead of going straight to ground duties, she got more maternity leave after the baby was born. Didn't pay much attention at the time, as I was young, free and single! I do know she had bad flatulence, and it wasn't much fun sharing a crew seat with her

Thank you girls! It made me feel so much more comfortable about this trip. I have no morning sickness so far and no other symptoms except shortness of breath and full breasts.

Kalo - you should wear flight socks though, even for a short flight, as pregnancy automatically makes your blood a bit thicker.

My first child was conceived in China, we then flew to Hong Kong, then Hong Kong back to England. At 8 weeks pregnancy, I had to go to fly to New York for work and fly back. The pregnancy was totally normal and all went well so I wouldn't worry about it.

I will be flying to America at 15 weeks and my midwife has assured me it's ok. Just get a pair of flight socks to help prevent blood clots and try to walk in the isle as much as possible. Have a nice flight!!

peachygirl · 02/09/2006 21:18

I've just come back from the USA and within 2 weeks did 4 flights 2 long and 2 short haul. I went at 13 weeks and came back on the first day of my 15th week. I have been fine.
The advice I had was to wear some of those highly flattering flight compression socks and to drink lots of water.
This was a bit of a problem with the current restrictions with liquids on planes but both me and DH drank lots before we got on the planes. To give our airline their dues they did come round with water very regulary especially on the longhaul flights.
We flew with United and they give out free soft drinks too which included full size cans of fruit juice which with ice made a change from just water.
TIP try to ask for ice in your drinks as it will add more to your water comsumption.
