it means that the baby is partly engaged. how many weeks are you?

camera · 24/08/2006 13:18

i am 37 weeks - but she didnt say that was engaged just thatt the baby is back to back and i should try and crawl on all fours to encourage the baby to engage -its all very confusing at a time when i'm so emotional ,

well the numbers show how far down the baby's head is. 3/5 means that she can feel 3/5 of the baby's head (so 2/5 is down in the pelvis)

Cool! Get ready for childbirth!

it's how long is a piece of string I'm afraid!
DD was 3/5 engaged for weeks and still went overdue and had to be induced. Hope you are luckier!

clairemow · 24/08/2006 13:37

same here. 38 1/2 weeks now, baby has been 4/5 and then 3/5 engaged for the last 3 weeks... It can stay like that for ages, but then it could also decide to come any time too! Good luck!

hairymclary · 24/08/2006 21:25

yep, piece of string! I went from 0/5 at 38 weeks to 4/5 then back to 2/5
They know how to keep you on your toes, even before they're born

Camera - have you got a birthing ball you can sit on? You can get gym balls in Argos for £3.99 and they are great for sitting on to encourage the baby to get into a good position. As others have said 3/5 means the head is engaged so is going in the right direction. It can be engaged for weeks before you into labour though.

From ivillage, a clear explantion:

To find out if your baby's head is engaging into the pelvis, the midwife feels how much of your baby's head is lying above your pubic bone. The way in which a midwife records engagement can be a bit confusing if you're not a midwife. If she can feel four fifths of the baby's head, she writes down 'four fifths', but this actually means that your baby is only one fifth engaged.
If she can feel two fifths of the head above the pubic bone, the baby is three fifths engaged. If she can feel one fifth of the baby's head, she writes down 'one fifth' and the baby is four fifths engaged. If she can't feel the baby's head at all, the baby would be fully engaged.

As it happens, when you are pregnant with a second or subsequent baby, it is quite common not to engage until the last minute. I can't say for sure, but I think it's most likely that you will go into labour at around the same time, perhaps a day or two earlier, as you did with your previous pregnancies.

Its a bit like 3 sheets in the wind, only with milk?

clairemow · 26/08/2006 15:53

thanks westcountrylass, that's really clear. My first baby arrived the equivalent of yesterday in this pregnancy - roll on tonight then!!!
