I'm on pregnancy no2 and this time my dh wanted to find out the sex. I was told I was having another girl (80% sure he was) which is fine however I've since been told that mistake are often made at this stage - how true is this? Anyone been told wrong out there and how do they get it wrong????????

At the first scan they are never 100% sure esp with girls as they only assess at this stage by the position of the area and not by seeing any bits as such.
At the 5 month scan if they see something between the legs they normally can confirm a boy, however sometimes the willy can be hidden so they never atually confirm if it's a girl 100% at any scan.
Hope this makes sense!

Oh so it really could be a boy then! Interesting, better slow down a bit with the idea of it being a girl.

at the 12 week scan they can't really tell, it's too early as the sex organs have not formed properly. the only way you can tell early on is via an amnio. the 20 week one is a fairly good teller of sex but they have to cover their backs in case they make a mistake. i had scans at 12, 13, 20, 28, 32 and 36 weeks and the little bugger had her legs crossed the whole time. the only clue we had a any point was at the 28 weeks scan when the radiographer saw her having a wee!!! and the direction of the wee made her suspect it was a girl but we weren't 100% sure until she was born.

our maty hosp have now stopped telling parents in case of being sued. which i think is riduculous (to be sued that this) I didnt find out for either dss but with ds1 i had could really tell by the scan. ds2 there was noway of tell as he kept his bits a secret during scanning

I think they are generally very reluctant to tell the sex, not just for protection against suing but some people have a very stange views on the sex of the child for religious or cultural reasons. The first scan at Kings was a pleasure - the team were amazing, friendly and really informative, second time round at local hospital I had to ask her twice to check for the sex and she didn't even print me a piccie!

I actually was told when I had my nuchal scan and he volunteered the info. I didn't realise it was even possible to know at this stage so it came as surprise.

i was told ds1 was a boy at 12 week scan. i had the top scanner guy do it and his exact words were:
'im 99% sure that's a little todger i can see!'

with this preg they wouldnt tell me and the woman was particularly miserable anyway. she said she wouldnt even try.
i was told at 20weeks this one is a boy too. they showed us on screen and it was very clear!!

I was told at 20wks that he tough it could be a girl but wasnt sure. I really felt he didnt want to tell me, asked my wht i wanted to know.. bla bla.. So i am back in a few wks and going to ask again.

At my 20 week scan the woman asked me if I wanted to know the sex of the baby - I did - she told me " it's a little burger not a hot dog!" AND SHE WAS WRONG !!!! I had a huge hephalump of a boy ! I think scans can never be 100 %.

at the 12 wks (nucal) scan they went past his bottom and I thought I saw what they call "boy bits" - knowing it wasn't me getting confused with the umbilical cord, for sure.

at the 22 wk scan it was far more difficult to see anything like that because the baby was bigger and moving a lot, but on the last scan which was I think 34 wks, they actually found a lump and said 'there you go, those are his testicles...'
