Would a 4d scan show weather a baby had downs syndrome or not?

Hi am 39 weeks pregnant. I am 20 years old a little concerned as although it would make no difference whatsoever to the love i would give to my baby am worried that baby has downs syndrome. My partner keeps telling me how our 4d scan would have picked this up does anyone have an opnion on this?

Why are you worried?

Twiglett · 23/08/2006 21:17

no it wouldn't

misdee · 23/08/2006 21:18

you are worried because the baby isnt moving as much?

hairymclary · 23/08/2006 21:19

no, it wouldn't have picked it up. why do you think it has down syndrome?

geekgrrl · 23/08/2006 21:19

nope. my dd's DS wasn't even picked up by the paediatrician who checked her over postnatally.

prekky, I'm sorry you're getting so stressed about this. I'm sure your baby is absolutely fine.

i dont mean to offend anyone but i would say as you are only twenty the chance your baby has downs is very minimal. thats not to say u cant have a child with downs but the chance is very very slim.
neither would i take an awful lot of notice of things read in magazines.
you have a week or less (?) to go?
enjoy your last few nights of peace and stop worrying about it!!

misdee · 23/08/2006 21:25

i think you need to calm down and enjoy the last week. not dismissing your fear, but it around a week you will meet your lovely little baby.

and statistically your baby wont have DS.

misdee and 1b1b are absolutely right - I know you can go a bit loopy at the end of a pregnancy, particularly when it's your first and you just sit and wait for your first contraction. But it's such a waste, really. You'll never have this kind of freedom again (well, at least not for another 18 years) - please try to make the most of it and not give in to something that is, all things considered, a very irrational fear.

Hi prekky, congratulations and good luck with the iminent birth.
What's made you worry about this now?
Did you have the usual tests in the early stages?
I worried about 1 particular thing throughout my 1st pregnancy, it's very normal but nearlky all the time they are totally unfounded.

If you want to ask any questions ayway about Down's syndrome, if there's a niggle that you want to chat about then I'm here to chat to you.

Everythings going to be ok, no matter what though, okay

I had a 4d scan at around 20 weeks but it was specifically what they call a fetal abnormality scan where the obstetrician looked for physical signs of downs syndrome in the baby, e.g. hole in the heart, no bone in the small fingers, and the length of the baby's middle toe. He also measured and studied the baby's nose.
He had to specifically look for these signs, and we had to go to an obstetrician who specialises in these scans. Just having a 4d scan wasn't enough.
That's just our experience.
I am only 25 and had the nuchal transluency test at 13-14 weeks ( we live in HK and as we are going through the private medical system we are offerred every test possible, regardless of my age) and because it came back with a high risk for down syndrome, we had the fetal abnormality scan but said no to amnio. test. Sometimes I wish had had amnio. if only for peace of mind (am now 32 weeks pregnant) but our fetal abnormaliy scan came back with no physical signs of down syndrome and since then our obstetrician hasn't mentioned it!
