Oh, I am crying with the pain

I have a prolapsed lumbar disc which only flares up in pregnancy. 23 weeks with DC2 and the last 4 days have been torture. I spoke to the GP on Friday and she advised switching to co- codamol (8/500) from paracetamol.

It works but I feel guilty for taking it. I keep letting it wear off thinking I'll be fine and then bursting into tears with the pain. I can't move without it. I can't walk. I can't sneeze. I can't cough. (Got a cold at the mo too).

I'm going to phone for an emergency GP appt tomorrow morning. I see my midwife next Mon and the physio next Thurs.

No advice or experience but hugs, it might be worth enquiring about amitripiline (or however it's spelt) my doc's advised it as an AD in the third trimester.

Hope your feeling better soon Thanks

Don't feel bad. I took cocodamol for several weeks when I was pregnant with DS. I had a large ovarian cyst. DS is 7 now and no ill effects :)

I also took co codamol during my last pregnancy for spd

Dd is a year old and perfectly fine

bellediva · 21/04/2014 22:27

Yes I took co-codamol during pregnancy (on GP advice). Don't feel guilty about it. I hope physio helps.

Oh bless you. I had a disc injury 5 years ago which flares up intermittently and at times the pain can be unbearable. I fully expect at some point this pregnancy it's going to flare up again with the extra strain that pregnancy brings (I'm only 18 weeks at mo so plenty of time yet). Is it worth asking your GP for a referral to a physio or similar for some advice? x

I have done loads of research into drug safety in pregnancy.
You would be amazed at the amount of stuff some people have to take and they, and their babies, are absolutely fine.

It is better, IMO, for you not to be in prolonged, excruciating pain.

Also, try sleeping on a folded duvet for extra padding, apply ice packs (wrapped in a towel), wear the best airfilled trainers you can get to absorb the shock waves that travel up your spine with every step.

Ask for a referral to an obstetric physio as they may be able to offer more suggestions.

Thanks for messages to wake up to! They have cheered me up. I'll talk to the GP about specialist obstetric physio.

Saw the GP this morning. She advised taking the co-codamol in this trimester was fine. I've to get to the pool and go walking in the water. She phoned physio and put me on a priority list in case there are any cancellations.

Thank you all for your posts.
