Acid reflux/heartburn - twin pregnancy

I am 32+4 weeks with twins and have had terrible heartburn and acid reflux since fairly on in the pregnancy. My midwife have me ranitidine which seemed to ease it until recently. Gaviscon doesn't even come close to getting rid of it. The only thing I can drink is milk because everything else may as well be pure acid! Even when I am sat up I get it, it's impossible to sleep and I am at a loss about what to do! I am seeing my midwife again next week but I don't know whether there is anything she can do or if I am stuck with this for the next 4 weeks! Does anyone else have any experience of this - is there anything else I can do? I'm miserable Sad

Im fefeeling your pain. 31+5 with twins and have been suffering forever. I was given the zantac stuff and suffered excruciating indigestion. I've been drinking gaviscon like water. There is omeprozole (sp) which is next one up strength wise but I haven't got my bum in gear to go to drs. Not sure if your mw would be able to prescribe it for you or not. I'm jealous your a wk ahead of me :-(

No twins but terrible heartburn with just one! Drink milk before bed and eat bland food like cheese and crackers.

This is my second pregnancy. Heartburn so bad last time I've permanently damaged the sphincter at the top of the stomach so this time its excruciating. My doctors won't prescribe proton pump inhibitors like omaprazole or lansoprazole during pregnancy. However. The max recommended dose of ranitidine (zantac) is 300mg a day - but it is allowed for a twelve week period or so to double that to 600mg. My docctor looked it up in her wee dosage book while I sat and cried as the heartburn was so bad I was being sick and not sleeping and broken (on top of Hyperemesis, its the.last straw).

Anf if course. All the usual stuff about small meals / avoid certain trigger foods / sleep sitting up or on your left side.

Sorry for dodgy posting style and typos. On phone with fat fingers.

And I'm not advising you to up your ranitidine dose - just that you might ask your doctor about increasing it!

I had horrendous heartburn in my twin pregnancy till my consultant prescribed omeprazole it is safe in pregnancy and really works. You have to take it for several days to feel the effect.

Thanks! I might have to make a dr appt this week as I don't think I can wait until I see the mw again! If I can just get it under control I know that I could cope better with all the rest of the crappy symptoms I have!

I was taking omeprazole pre-pregnancy. Consultant won't let me take it anymore so I think it depends on who you ask.

Had this with all three pregnancies years ago. You won't like this but milk makes it worse, it just is initially soothing. The best system (tried and tested) for me was don't eat later than 6 pm ( water only in the evenings, room temp no ice!) and nothing fatty or spicy at any time. Good luck!
The symptoms started at 9 weeks in my third pregnancy so had plenty time to experiment Wink
