I had a brand new cot for my first babba which got put in the loft wrapped up when she had outgrown it! Anyway second baby is due in June so we got all stored stuff out of loft today. The mattress still seemed sealed ok but to me looked a bit dusty! I am now thinking would a brand new mattress be better, I mean what if old mattress has absorbed dust!!! What would you do????

You are meant to get a new mattress for each baby anyway. I don't quite remember the reasoning - the mattress moulds itself to the first baby's shape; also there can be gases released from the inside of an old mattress? - either way; general advice is new baby = new mattress.

I don't know if I'm being neurotic or what but I don't want to take any chances, you gotta be so careful with mattresses! I actually think I'm talking myself into buying a new one here!!!!!

Aside from the dust issue if it's been used for previous DC it will have bacteria etc embedded in it now, especially if any nappy explosion/potty training/vomiting situations occurred through the night etc!
But I think the main thing is that the weight/shape/size of a growing child (especially if used for a few years) will have compressed the interior of the mattress so it will no longer be as comfortable and supportive for a newborn.

I'd just buy a new one tbh, they start from 30-40 quid depending on size.
Would also advise turning the mattress end to end and flipping sides every do often so it gets even wear all over and doesn't mould to child's shape in one place and vacuuming it every once in a while. (I do this with our adult mattresses too)

Poster above is correct new baby = new mattress.

Just get a new one. They're not expensive and if anything were to happen you'd always worry that it could've been because of the mattress.

I agree new baby = new mattress

But ... we found that our dc2 wouldn't sleep on the new cot mattress and in a moment of desperation swapped it for dc1's which was on top of the wardrobe in her room. He slept brilliantly on it and 16 months later he still does - so doesn't always work out as you plan!

I wouldn't have put him on a 'dusty' one though - this was all wrapped up and hadn't ever been further than the top of the wardrobe so not damp or anything either.

New mattress for new baby no matter what condition 'old' mattress is in. Cotbed, cot, Moses basket, carry cot all need new mattresses
