I had my booking in appt last week where I had to provide a msu sample which my gp surgery sent off. Does anybody know what they are looking for in this sample?

Have just had a letter from the surgery saying it has to be repeated.

Protien and a sign of uti. Unfortunatley ive always suffered with my kidneys, so i have to have monthly ones sent off. Nothing to worry about chuck :) for it to be repeated, means it was probably contaminated and they couldnt get a proper reading from the lab. Ive had a couple like that. I always use a jug to pee in before transfering it to the pot lol so im guessing thats where the contamination comes from. If they find u have a uti your midwife will contact you asap as mine did :) when your preggers your more prone to them, its just routine and like i said nothing to worry about :) x

Thank you, hopefully nothing serious then. I have had a staph skin infection recently which I have taken antibiotics for, I'm not a 100% that it has cleared up and was maybe thinking that is what has contaminated it?
Can't say I was overly careful with the bottle as was awkward in the surgery toilet, they did actually have a jug on top of the toilet which had patients urine samples written on it Shock surely that can't be hygienic or a good way to get clear results?! No, i didn't use the jug.

What! Lol no it cant be very hygienic -.- thought hospitals would have had more brains than that lol ahhh yeas i bet thats what it will be :) because the antibiotics are in your system they sometimes cant get a true reading therefore have to do it again. Forgot to mention im also on propholactic to protect against uti through my pregnancy and thats another reason they have to be sent off. You should try the jug thing really helps :p although im findin it more awkward now as the bump has shot out over past couple of weeks and is ever expanding :p obviuolsy i make sure it is cleaned out afterwards :) x

My midwife advised me to try and get a 'mid' sample. Wee a bit, then into sample pot. Apparently sometimes the first bit can be contaminated with discharge? Anyway said I'd try after 2 samples showed traces of protein...

Ideally the gp/midwife should give advice on how to take a good urine sample: after a shower to ensure you're clean and a midstream sample. Otherwise the urine can get contaminated with different bacteria from down below. They send it to a microbiology lab who check for infection

Have just read online the best way to do it. The midwife just told me to do a sample on the way out. Didn't even say midstream. It wasn't until after I looked at the test form that i saw msu had been ticked.

They're looking for blood, protein and leukocytes. All signs of a UTI. A UTI left untreated can be dangerous in pregnancy, but don't be too alarmed - a mild bladder infection shouldn't be a big deal, but understandably they have to keep an eye on any infection that shows up in the body incase it becomes acute and needs antibiotics or whatever.

I had leukocytes in my MSU during my booking in (i wasn't suprised, I'd felt a bit stingy that morning), and have just received a letter from the hospital asking for a repeat sample. I imagine its really common.

I've found the same, the first few samples I handed it sometimes showed slight traces of blood or protein, were sent off and everything came back clear. Once I made sure they were mid-stream only (hadn't been told to do that) they have been fine!
