Down Syndrome Test Results - what were yours?

Had ours back yesterday and im more than a little concerned even though the letter said low risk our odds are 1 in 240 which is a massive difference to my first 2 - 1 in 12000 and 1 in 17000.

Really cant stop thinking about it and wanted to know how many others get similar results and how they feel, i know its only a 0.4% chance of our baby having downs but im worrying why my test results have shown such a high risk for this baby and not my other 2. Im 27, normal weight- my age related risk is something like 1 in 1100.

Just a little scared right now and needed some advice from others who have or are going through a similar thing.

I went for a harmony I as I didn't want to be in the same situation. My nhs result would have been about 1 in 800 but the harmony was 1 in 16000 so more than reassuring.

Is this an option for you?

Mummyto3tobe · 17/04/2014 12:18

not really at 600 thats quite expensive plus i think they only do it in london dont they? - were in wales. if we had a high risk result of 1 in 150 or higher i probably would opt for the harmony test over the amnio. just literally in shock i never expected a result so close to the cut off. Sad

nifty is cheaper and more widely available I think.

SpearmintLino · 17/04/2014 12:20

Just to reassure you, I had exactly the same result as you during my first 2 pregnancies; I had amnios for both and they proved there was nothing wrong. With my third I skipped the triple test and went straight for an amino. Again, the amnio showed no Downs.

SpearmintLino · 17/04/2014 12:22

I've just read your original post again and see yours said low risk. Mine was high risk - if yours was a worry the midwife would be straight round to you, so try not to worry too much.

Mummyto3tobe · 17/04/2014 12:26

whats nifty?

They wont offer me any further tests due to me being outside of the 'high risk' band. high risk is 1 in 150 or higher here so nothing we can do unless we want to pay.

We are just both a bit upset this has come back this way as now the pregnancy is going to be clouded over with worry no matter what midwife says to us. Im just waiting for the 20 week scan now which is a week on monday to see what they find then. hopefully that will put my mind at ease a bit more, from googleing last night aparently a nose bone is a good sign your baby doesnt have downs (not comepletely accurate but a good sign) and we had a gender scan last week so i went and got it out to have a look and i can definatlely see a white bone at the bottom of his nose in the exact place it showed on the examples online. that reassured me a litte.

argh wish the letter just said either high or low risk, then this wouldnt happen.

SpearmintLino · 17/04/2014 12:34

I'm confused - you said in your first post that the letter DID say low risk?

Mummyto3tobe · 17/04/2014 12:37

what i mean is i wish it just said low risk, without giving the 1 in 240 bit. It just causes what will probably be unessesary worry for mums when they get results back that are close to the cut off but that dont get offered any further testing due to be outside the high risk range.

OP posts:
SpearmintLino · 17/04/2014 12:40

But if it's not high risk then you're not high risk. You're worrying unnecessarily I'm afraid. Enjoy your Easter holiday Smile

CharityCase · 17/04/2014 12:42

Nifty is a blood test which can tell you with 99% accuracy is the baby has DS. It works by detecting the baby's DNA in the mother's blood.

RufusTheReindeer · 17/04/2014 12:43

Ds1 was one in 240

Dd and ds2 were one in over 1000

I didn't care with the first two but I did worry with number three because I thought I would find it hard to cope

RufusTheReindeer · 17/04/2014 12:44

When I did the test for ds1 we were high risk...just!

So maybe I've got the figures wrong

Mummyto3tobe · 17/04/2014 12:47

aparently theyv lowered it from 1 in 250 to 1 in 150 for the high risk category. so that would make sense depending on how many years ago it was. hence my worry! - did you have any further tests with DS1?

OP posts:
SpearmintLino · 17/04/2014 12:49

Then they've lowered it for a reason, OP.

WipsGlitter · 17/04/2014 12:52

What you also need to think about is if you do progress with any more testing is it so you will 'know' or so you can decide if you wanted a termination.

Roshbegosh · 17/04/2014 12:54

She isn't worrying unnecessarily, you can never say that, and I understand this is hard for everyone when given a risk factor.

Even if it's one in a million then that one person has the baby with Down's. That is the trouble with giving risk probabilities rather than certainty. The fact is that this level of 1 in 240 is a low risk and there won't be any further testing as amnio carries its own risk. At 1 in 240 you would be more likely to lose a healthy pregnancy from an amnio than have a baby with Down's. That's a dilemma.

I hope you can feel positive about the pregnancy as you are low risk, and sadly no test exists that will predict everything that could be wrong. The difference could be due to just a fraction of a mm discrepancy on either CRL or the NT measurements so try not to let this upset you.

Geneticsbunny · 17/04/2014 12:58

Just to complicate issues the risk of miscarriage with an amino is between 1 in 100 and 1 in 50 depending on how good the doctor is. This is the only next step currently available on the nhs which is why it hasn't been offered to you. I.e. the isk of miscarriage is much higher than the risk of your child having downs.

RufusTheReindeer · 17/04/2014 13:11

mummy

Well that would explain it!

Ds1 is 15 now Grin

We had no further tests. I was at a high risk of miscarriage (bled virtually the whole way through the pregnancy) and I had tried for two years for this baby and I wasn't about to lose it

I did ask if I could have a late amnio so the risk of miscarriage could be removed but by the time I got to over 30 weeks I couldn't be bothered

Fissawissa · 17/04/2014 19:17

My test came back 1:209, I'm 34 and this will be our second child.
I was a bit worried by the results even though the letter also said low risk.
I'm not going for any further tests as I think the tests would be unnessary seeing as I'm still low risk.

Cariad007 · 17/04/2014 22:21

I'm 37 and my test came back as 1 in 190, purely because my bHCG level was 3 times the average. My son is fine.
