Found out I was pregnant 4th April.. Went docs the following Monday got told I was 5 weeks, then Tuesday I started bleeding, went to the hospital, had bloods taken & a vaginal examination, was told my cervix was closed so they didn't know why I was bleeding so had to stay over night to get a scan the next day.. Ended up not having a scan because they said my blood work come back & showed there was no baby. So I had miscarried. Also if I done another test it would show up negative. Now I'm thinking how when I was told my cervix is closed??. Also I have stopped bleeding already, was only period like bleeding for a day & half..

It sounds like you've had a chemical pregnancy, sorry Thanks

I'm so sorry.

If you had a positive test and were dated at 5 weeks, it was not a chemical pregnancy (urine tests only work after implantation and 48hrs after HCG starts being produced) it was an early miscarriage. You might think why quibble over words but some women I know who have had several losses sought tests later than they were entitled to on the NHS because they did not realise some of their losses 'counted' as miscarriages (this is only 1% of women, very rare, so don't worry). Or had GPs say 'chemical pregnancy' and delay them when it turned out they had a treatable condition (again VERY rare don't worry). In my case - all my losses were before 7 weeks- my GP and gynie were both clear that positive test = miscarriage and I luckily got diagnosed and treated ASAP, but knowing it can happen I always like to make sure people know!

When you have a very early miscarriage, the embryo can simply be absorbed back into the body (indeed with a missed miscarriage later, often the embryo shrinks before it leaves the body). Then, the blood sometimes passes out of you like a period and the cervix remains closed because it's just blood (or your cervix opens a tiny bit but because there is only a small amount of tissue, it closes so quickly that by the time you get to a hospital it's over).

The should also have scanned you to check everything is 'clearing' properly (horrible but safety first). I had a 5 week loss and had a follow up scan a week later. Just because it is early doesn't mean zero risk. One of my losses was only a week or 2 later and there were complications (again very very rare but they should scan you).

Make an appointment with your GP. Visit the Miscarriage Association website before your visit as they have excellent advice and a support phoneline which should be able to answer your questions.

Thanks
