Flying in pregnancy

Those of you who are pregnant or have been pregnant, how late would you be/were you happy to fly up to in your pregnancy.

I am 21 weeks pregnant and we are due to go on holiday next week but my Dad has been taken ill with a DVT and won't be able to fly for at least 6 weeks (although I am still not happy about him flying even then!)

My sister wants us to go away on holiday after that, to Cyprus which is a 4 hour flight.

I am feeling a bit twitchy about flying at 28 weeks pregnant.

Am I being unreasonable?

I flew at 28/29 weeks - it was 3 hours. It was fine. Drink plenty of water and walk around. You'll be there before you know it.

A little Smile. I was supposed to go to South Africa to do a safari at 28 weeks (must have been mad to consider it in retrospect) but the ash cloud blew in and that was the end of the babymoon. We could have flown a week later but by then I was nervous that we might not get back and I'd be having the baby out there. An overland return from SA isn't really an option. Grin

If you are having a healthy pregnancy and not getting v swollen ankles I'd be fine about it. Will you be ok in 6 weeks with the heat in Cyprus though?

Hope your Dad is doing ok - DVTs are no fun, and the drugs Sad Get him to have a chat with his doctor - there's a reasonably strong chance he won't be allowed to go if his meds haven't been stabilised. My DH's took 12 weeks to sort and it's not unusual.

I have flown very late in pregnancy -one flight was way past airline and insurance cut offs but a doctor cleared it ( lied basicially ) as it was an civil emergency.
I would be more concerned about facitities/insurance cover for premature labour at your destination.

Hi OP.

I don't think I would go in 4 weeks time, if I were in your shoes.

Most airlines have a limit of 32 weeks - but if you don't have to, why would you? Flights become uncomfortable once we have bigger bumps.

I will fly next week (I will be 32 weeks), an 8 hour flight, from Africa to my home country, where I will give birth, so I HAVE to fly; wouldn't do it if I didn't have it to….

Hi op, I'm not sure if I would if I had the choice but if it's fine by the airline and you are ok in yourself then go. I am in Cyprus and know a bit about the medical care here and have experienced maternity care here. If you decide to go and have any questions, feel free to ask! The weather will be warm then but not too bad. Late 20s at the moment but it is getting warmer.
