Recently discovered I'm pregnant and I think I need to change my diet. I generally eat lots of crisps, bread, biscuits, occasionally a bit of fruit or a sandwich and sometimes salad dripping in dressing at work for lunch/snacks then I'll have a healthy-ish meal in the evening. is this horrendous?! Any tips on good foods to eat when pregnant x

Eat whatever you want lady! And loads of it!

The guidelines are simply to try and eat healthily. Plus the list of foods it is recommended you avoid (various cheeses, etc) which you have to make your mind up about.

If you don't eat much fruit and veg, it's not a bad time to try and eat more of it if sickness, appetite and digestion allow.

Your body is pretty good at making sure the embryo gets nutrition so don't worry!

My tip would be to up your fibre though... I speak as someone who learned the hard as in hard poo and constipation way. An extra portion of veg and fruit juice works, plus wholemeal bread.

WorraLiberty · 09/04/2014 20:03

I would increase your fruit and fibre intake for sure...as squizita says, constipation is no fun Grin

I hope you take the first reply with a pinch of low sodium salt as eating healthily and thinking about portion size is important during pregnancy.

Congratulations Thanks

Agree with squiz some extra fruit. I've been eating more fruit/drinking more juice so have avoided the constipation thank god. I still take multi vitamins just to be safe to (am 19 weeks now) I get dizzy quite a lot and if you find that to, try eating smaller meals throughout the day or have snacks to hand, I always find afternoons I feel a bit dizzy/light headed.

Thanks everyone your messages explain a lot I haven't been to the loo in 9 days so constipated! It's painful! I'll try eat some more fruit and veg- what's best for fibre? Xx

I'd just started the slimming world diet just before I found out I was pregnant - at first I though oh to hell with it I'll eat what I want but I'm pretty much sticking to it. Lots of fruit and veg, lots of water, very little sugar and lots of protein - which suits me as I love meat!

PosyFossilsShoes · 09/04/2014 21:08

I started doing super healthy eating when I found out I was pg but the last few weeks I've been so nauseous that only a few foods appeal, all of them bland and carby.

At which point I thought f*ck it, I will eat what I can keep down, and the bean will have to suck up what nutrients it can.

I have just eaten (and enjoyed) vegetables for the first time in weeks so fingers crossed I can resume the healthy bit.

OP don't feel guilty about eating what you can cope with if you get constant morning sickness. I have done my own careful survey and can report that nausea is horrible, guilt is horrible, and nauseous guilt / guilty nausea is REALLY horrible.

SJC2014 · 09/04/2014 21:19

I agree! There are so many conflicting theories and so much advice online I've just been eating what I fancy minus the forbidden food haha! I'll have to just include a bit more veg and water- I do drink pints of orange juice is this also ok? Can you get too much vitamin c?!

I used to drink loads of orange juice but can currently only drink it diluted half and half with water. My current favourite drink is elderflower cordial cos it seems to stop me feeling ill!
