Nuchal fold test a no go...

Hi all,

So... Baby wouldn't play ball and they couldn't do a nuchal fold measurement. They didn't book me in again for a repeat and only referred me on for a Quad blood test at 15 weeks. Little concerned by this tbh! Anyone else experienced this?

I was the same. Awkward baby meant no nuchal measurement.

They did the blood tests at 18 weeks and my risk came back very low (1 in 150,000) which was satisfactory enough for me.

I had this trouble with one of my identical twins, and without it they wouldnt do the blood tests either as the special algorithm they used only worked for twins for NT plus 12 week tests, not the quad test. So effectively no screening for me. I chanced it and was lucky (x2 - both would have been affected if 1 was).

Chasinglemons · 08/04/2014 16:37

I also missed the measurement as the first scan was booked too late for it to be possible.

They did the blood test with results showing low risk as EQ

They didn't even offer it at my hospital when I was expecting DS, and this time they struggled to get the baby into the right position. They do offer further screening though so it never occurred to me to find it a problem.

I had he same in the last pregnancy. I had a blood test which came back 1:3600, which considering I was 37 I was v relieved by!

Waggamamma · 08/04/2014 16:57

I never wanted the test and the sonographer replied 'oh thank goodness because the baby is in an awkward position and I would really struggle to do it'

I don't think that's unusual. try not to worry. Would the outcome make a difference to your decision to continue the pregnancy, if not just try to forget about it.

EyelinerQueen · 08/04/2014 17:07

It would have made a difference to me Wagga.

I'm sure I'm not alone.

Hi Stargirl, you could consider having a harmony blood test, if finances would allow.

This would give you much more certainty than the nuchal, and might set your mind at rest more quickly

Roseandmabelshouse · 08/04/2014 18:27

I would have insisted on going back to try again. Screening is such a personal choice though.

Stargirl7 · 08/04/2014 18:47

Thanks ladies :) think I'll wait for the blood test results when they're done at 15 weeks. In fact having them next week I think.
Not sure i can justify the £700 needed for the harmony tests unless the bloods are a poor statistic. Though do you need to be at a specific stage in pregnancy for the test?
In hindsight I wish I'd made them rescan :( hopefully I'll be low risk!

As a long thread recently illustrated too, it's not just about whether you would continue the pregnancy Wagga. For a lot of people it is also about being prepared, choosing a suitable place of delivery, researching...

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago. The baby was not in a position that meant they could take the measurement and even after going to the toilet and a little walk, it still wouldn't co-operate!

I was referred instead for the quad blood test and am awaiting my results now. I am nervous about what they come back with but trying to put it to the back of my mind.

As both of these tests only show the risk, not whether the baby does actually have Down's, neither is conclusive anyway, so I don't think it makes much difference which test you have. You will have the option of further testing if they find a higher risk.

That said, a friend of a friend was low risk and her baby did have Down's. You can never be sure until it arrives....
