There is yours, the placenta and the baby.
Also I don't think they can hear the babies heart until around 16 weeks so you are likely hearing your heart and the placental blood flow

ilovepowerhoop · 08/04/2014 11:21

could be picking up your own heartbeat too

ilovepowerhoop · 08/04/2014 11:22

I dont even think midwives check for a heartbeat until around 16 weeks

EdwiniasRevenge · 08/04/2014 11:23

You should be able to hear your own heart beat which will be at a rate of about 60-80bpm

You will be able to hear the placental flow and the babies heart. Both should be 120+ bpm. Probably 140+.

You are unlikely to hear the baby at this stage but guess its not impossible.

SicknSpan · 08/04/2014 11:23

I think it's likely to be your heart beat rather than your baby. That's why midwives don't tend to try and find it this early as I don't think even their sensitive droppers pick baby's heartbeat up at this stage.

So frustrating though for you, bet you just want to hear it NOW! I was the same and it was such a relief when my mw listened in at about 14 weeks.

SicknSpan · 08/04/2014 11:24

Droppers? Dopplers!

gamerchick · 08/04/2014 11:27

Put it away for 10 weeks or so.. those things just stress you out I think.

Snook99 · 08/04/2014 11:33

I think I will gamer chick, and just wait a few weeks but my god did that scare me ahaa! Thank you for putting my mind at ease :) x

you can find it at 9 weeks. but It's not common.

JustDanni · 08/04/2014 21:57

I heard the same at 9 weeks and when the midwife had a listen at 21 weeks there was also an echo. There is only one baby in there in my case and it is most likely the placenta you are hearing.

Bornin1984 · 08/04/2014 21:59

These things should be banned to be sold to people who are not medically trained to know the difference in sounds! They do nothing to relieve anxiety! Makes it worse if a) u can't hear anything b) don't know the difference between the sounds!

Some midwives don't check until week 20-22! My consultant didn't listen to mine until week 17!

VJONES1985 · 08/04/2014 22:02

So there's no way to tell the difference between the placenta and the baby? I listened today and could hear a very clear one in one area and a 'background' one lower down (but neither of them was my own heartbeat).

SpottyTeacakes · 08/04/2014 22:04

Placenta is more of a whoosh whoosh iirc

mssleepyhead · 08/04/2014 22:34

I picked up baby's heartbeat at 13 weeks and think I've got pretty used to telling the difference between the different sounds now. At either side of your abdomen, you'll hear your heartbeat. It's slow and you can match it to your pulse in your neck, or your heart beat! When the baby gets bigger, you'll hear baby's heart beat - MUCH faster than yours and quite thumping. Then you'll hear the placenta, which is about the same speed but "whooshier", definitely different to the heartbeat. I'm now 20 and a half weeks and have been able to find the heart beat every time I've tried, but I know that's not the case for everyone so if you can't find it don't despair. It depends where your placenta is, your size and where baby is.

EdwiniasRevenge · 08/04/2014 23:28

Babies heart beat is "clicky". Placenta is "whooshy". But the blood flow in the placenta originates in the babies heart so if you hear either it means all is well :)

Alb1 · 08/04/2014 23:40

I started tryna use my doppler at 9 weeks and cudnt pick it up, jus got loads of wierd whooshing sounds and lots of my own hb! Finally found it at 12 weeks, maybe controversial advice but I watched loads of YouTube videos to check how other women did it and what all of the different sounds are, now at 19 weeks I can pick him up easily (I discussed it with my mw aswell so check I was listening to the right thing)

Sometimesbrunette · 10/04/2014 01:54

I bought one of those too. Heard the placenta and it's 'whooshy' but that's it.
