Hi all

I think there may have been a thread on this recently but can't find it now.

I'm due to have a baby in 2 weeks (ELCS at 39 weeks) and there have been a few cases of chicken pox at DD's nursery. She hasn't had it yet.

She may very well not catch it (the cases have been in the older children's room / area), but what do I need to know / do if she does?

I've had chicken pox myself when I was little - does that offer adequate protection to me and baby? Does bf help protect baby after birth? Should I consider the vaccine, for myself or baby?

The NHS website is not very clear, particularly not on whether you need to worry at all when you've had it before.

Many thanks

DD2 had chicken pox a couple of weeks ago when I was 37wks & the MW told me that as I had it before, I should be fine, but if I did show any symptoms to get in touch with her/dr ASAP (I think it is possible to get it more than once, but v.v.unlikely)

As I understand it, the only way the baby could catch it (while it's inside) is via you - so while it's still in it's safe! Not sure what would happen if your DD got it & was still infectious when baby is born though... I guess they would have to stay apart for a few days?

Sorry, I know nothing about vaccine - you could try phoning NHS direct for more info tomorrow?

Hi Bessie. Thanks very much for responding, and sorry your DD2 has been ill. Hope things are better now.

Sounds like hopefully all should be fine - either DD won't catch it or she will catch it while I'm still pg.

Thanks again
