I may be going against the crowd here, but I would worry that we don't yet know enough about the effect of ecigs as they haven't been around long enough. Growing babies is not the best thing to be experimenting with. I might say you'd be better off with fags, at least we know the worst already.

If you do vape, buy the expensive ones that you know are well regulated. Don't buy fake ones from the market or anywhere dodgy. It's one thing saying EU regulations require x and y, but fakes wont comply with it. Better to inhale nicotine than god knows what.

Very hard for you xx Don't rule out giving up- you may feel right now that it's more than you can cope with, but once you are further into your pregnancy and it feels real to you, you may find it becomes much easier. Just keep an open mind on that.

doubleshotespresso · 03/04/2014 12:15

teenage many thanks..... I keep thinking if I have lasted this far I should just keep going, but really do keep fantasising about runny poached eggs on toast with spinach!!!

alita7 · 03/04/2014 12:44

my market sells the same ones as the ones from a reliable online shop but but agree other markets might not be so good.

Well the chemicals themselves aren't chinese but when the Chinese make the formular they use chemicals not licenced here but the combination is Ok. like how in some energy drink, there is more caffeine than they put on the label as they also contain other substances that contain caffeine too.

NurseyWursey · 03/04/2014 12:47

One of my friend's told me a midwife and ob told her if she's going to continue smoking of any sorts, they'd rather it were cigs than E-cigs because at least they know for a fact what is in them and what the risks are

Beastofburden · 03/04/2014 12:49

Agree with nursey. ecigs are new, we have no idea what they might do to a developing baby.

Don't want to freak ppl out, but my mother was prescribed this shiny new drug for morning sickness when she was expecting me. Called thalidomide. Luckily she didn't fancy taking drugs when she was pregnant, and didn't ever use it.

prettywhiteguitar · 03/04/2014 12:53

Nicotine restricts blood flow to the baby through the umbilical cord, so cig or e cig you're doing the same damage.

The only thing to do is cut down and monitor your baby's movements, especially right at the end if your pregnancy. It can cause narrowing of the blood vessels to the placenta and cord so causes problems for getting oxygen to the baby .
Good luck it's super hard but every less cig you smoke is better for the blood supply

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/04/2014 13:15

Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor which is why, like caffeine, ideally it should be cut to the absolute minimum during pregnancy. However, this is as nothing compared to the damage done by inhaling smoke from a burning cigarette. The carbon monoxide levels in the blood from smoking will have an oxygen-depriving effect several orders of magnitude greater than nicotine (or caffeine) on its own.

There are things we still don't know about ecigs as I said previously, although we know far more than some of the scaremongering on this thread would suggest.

However we certainly know enough about nicotine for the NHS to feel confident about routinely prescribing NRT to pregnant women where necessary.

NurseyWursey · 03/04/2014 13:19

One of the main points is they aren't regulated, you can't group all e-cigs and e-liquids into one category. You have no idea what is being put into them, the methods used etc.

And that's coming from someone who loves the things - but I just wouldn't risk it whilst pregnant.

Beastofburden · 03/04/2014 13:26

vaping has such potential to reduce the damage that smoking does to ppl, pregnant or not. I guess we all just have a wait a few years for the data to come through. The sooner we get a regulated, NHS approved e-cigarette where we understand what the risks are, the better.

meantime, OP, I would go with NRT and the odd fag myself.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/04/2014 13:29

I'm neither advising or not-advising their use in pregnancy, I'm just sharing what I know about them. I find some of the posts saying you're better off smoking a real fag, or conflating the harm from nicotine with the harm from burning tobacco, very alarming though.

Meanwhile, and nothing to do with whether it's a wise choice in pregnancy, ecigs are regulated just not as medicines. If you are very worried about what is in your vapouriser, have you thought of mixing your own? It's very easy and works out much cheaper.

Beastofburden · 03/04/2014 13:31

To clarify- she's not well off smoking a real fag. It's certainly dangerous for the baby. and yes, smoke and nicotine are two separate risk factors.

Its just that ecigs are an unknown. Ecigs are regulated but not as medicines- ie, no data exists whatsoever on the effect on a developing foetus.

teasleromani123 · 03/04/2014 13:49

hello and thanks for the replies :) I brought one yesterday and tbh I haven't wanted a fag, I am on the nicotine one but a LOW dosage just till the craving calm down a bit lol, then I will go onto the one without any nicotine,, probably take a week or two but i'd rather have a few puffs on a Ecig than have a FULL FAG!!
THESE ECIGS ARE LIKE MARMITE,... YOU EITHER LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM!!
I love them lol x

Well done teasle, it's a revelation how easy it is, isn't it?

We've got a long-running vaping thread here, just jump right in if you want some support, advice or vape-related chat.

Pregnancy, these days especially, is such a minefield of weighing up risks and we don't always have all the data we'd like. Does anyone remember the hooha a year or so ago when they advised pg women to avoid 'household chemicals'? I think the vast majority of parents do their best to make the best choices they can in their particular circumstances and that's all we can do really. Now you've made a decision, I don't mind saying I'd have done the same in your shoes.

millabbie123 · 05/06/2014 18:50

I would speak to midwife and see if you can manage with the 0mg nicotine or a really low nicotine it would be better than cigarettes although my mum smoked 20 a day when she was pregnant and i am fine. Don't stress about it hun you can only do your best

I buy my stuff from www.ecigcrazy.co.uk they are really cheap and do free delivery

mattlou2 · 06/06/2014 08:56

You can go cold turkey! It's as simple as that. I smoked for 11 years and gave up almost 2 years ago (and I've always stopped for pregnacies). I smoked a good 20 a day for 11 years. You CAN stop. E Cigs are an illusion. You aren't fighting the habit AT ALL.
We could find out soon that there are worse side effects from E Cigs than cigarettes.
The better of 2 evils wouldn't be good enough for my child. Not when it's choice!
I have mental health illness and it would take me completely losing the plot before I risked my child with any medication let alone something I didn't need.
I know I sound really harsh and nasty but I'm not being. You just need to realise you can do anything for your child with some good old fashioned will power and determination. You don't need cigarettes of any kind. You baby does need the best chance possible!! First of many hurdles this baby will bring you! Let it empower you.
I can't sit and say something else to you, not when in a month, a year, a decade we could unveil hideous news about e Cigs. And I don't want that for any mother or child (or anyone for that matter).
All they care about is the money! Don't fool yourself or be fooled by advertising and people's ignorance! Your health can't be bought. Your baby's health can't be bought. Cherish it x

Sisyphus85 · 06/06/2014 12:23

OP, firstly e-cigs are almost 100% definitely safer than smoking.

So if you choose btwn the two, do e-cigs. With anything fairly new there are always risks - but a risk is better than known.

However.... if you switch then have a plan to cut down/switch to lower nicotine brand, and then stop before birth. Nicotine, in normal or electronic cigarettes is addictive - it will be shared in your blood across the placenta and so the baby will become addicted too.. cold turkey for the baby after birth won't be any easier than for you.

Otherwise, issues over birthweight and development shouldn't be affected as long as you cut out the B&H now. The biggest biological risk in pregnancy from smoking is that smoking causes less oxygen to be carried in your blood. Nicotine doesn't cause this, it is the tar and released carbon monoxide in regular cigarettes.

Good luck with everything!!

Curious16 · 29/05/2016 07:23

Hello, was everything ok with your baby when you smoked your ecigg during pregnancy?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 30/05/2016 06:47

There's new government guidance on the use of ecigs in pregnancy here. Key messages include:

  • Stopping smoking is one of the best things a woman and her partner can do to protect the health of their baby through pregnancy and beyond
  • Although not completely risk free, electronic cigarettes carry a fraction of the risk of smoking for users, with no known risks to bystanders
  • Electronic cigarettes do not contain carbon monoxide (CO) or many of the other harmful chemicals found in cigarettes
  • While licensed nicotine replacement products are the recommended option, if a pregnant woman chooses to use an electronic cigarette and if that helps her to stay smokefree, she should not be discouraged from doing so

I'd also love to know how OP got on Smile
