What happens at first GP appointment?

I'm pregnant with dc3 and have an appointment with the GP on Thursday. I'm showing and thinking I might be further along than I thought as periods have been irregular since reducing breastfeeding dd2. I can't remember if GP feels your tummy at all and therefore might be able to confirm I could be further along, if the midwife does it at the booking appointment or if I just have to wait for the scan?

You'd have to be a lot further along I'd have thought for feeling your tummy to tell much. I'm on no.3 and have never had that done at GP, booking or until well after the first scan.

Do you actually need to see the GP? In my area you self refer to the MW's (but I do realise that in some areas you have to go via the GP. I did in my old area).

All they will do is congratulate you and give you some leaflets normally. Although they might be able to refer you for an early dating scan more quickly than you'd see the MW's?

Yup you have to see GP first here. Because of not being sure on dates it makes booking the booking appointment tricky anyway!

Nothing for me. He asked when my LMP was and sent me on my way, saying he was referring me to the community midwives. I heard from them over a month later

Mine just checked my BP and congratulated me, but our surgery insist you see a GP prior to making booking appt. However if your AF has been all over the place I suspect they may try and get you a dating scan to date the pregnancy (they should be able to palpate whether you're 6 weeks or 12 from where your uterus is, but unlikely to be more accurate than that).

I had to see my GP first too. He just asked me what hospital I wanted to go to, filled out a booking form (painfully slowly and incorrectly - I corrected it before I handed it in at reception!) and took my BP. Completely pointless. I think the system of self-referring to a midwife makes much more sense.
