Any overweight or obese mums to be?

I'm almost 16 weeks pregnant and very overweight this time, about 3+ stone I'm sure.

The pregnany wasn't exactly planned because I had wanted to lose weight first but at the same time I was delighted to find out I was pregnant because I thought it would take ages to conceive.

I was slim on baby no.1, about a stone overweight on no.2 and now I am in this situation.

I just feel that I can't enjoy the pregnany because the guilt is eating me up. I had my booking appointment at 12 weeks (which was actually at 14 w) and while the midwife was nice, she warned me about developing gestational diabetes, high BP, difficult delivery etc. Obviously she had to tell me and I'm glad she did because it really was the kick I needed, I haven't had as much as a chocolate bar since. The scan picture was also much less clearer than on my other pregnancies and of course that has upset me too.
My Bp and urine were fine but she said if I didn't watch the weight that there's no way I'd be as lucky as the pregnany continues?

So I am eating healthier and smaller portions as well as walking every day. I hope it's not too late to do my best not to develop weight related problems?
I had a nice little bump on my other 2 babies at this stage but I don't even have that now because I've so much weight on my tummy anyway.
??

Is anyone else feeling the same or have any advice for me?

Thank you.

I had my booking in appointment on Tuesday and was horrified to find out my BMI was a whopping 6 points more than I thought. Turns out the student midwife worked it out wrong so I'm a little annoyed about that. They were really supportive though and there were no lectures or anything and I'm under the consultant because of previous PND anyway so until I have the GTT things will be the same as if I was in the normal weight range.

Is anyone here doing Slimming world? I'd really like to have someone to talk to about it and encourage one another. This is my first post on the site so I'm still a newbie lol.

Thanks Ellabella :) I hope your sickness stops really soon because it's just the worst feeling. How many weeks are you? I have trouble fancying things but my nausea disappeared a week of two ago and I'm only ten weeks. I think it happened last time too though so I'm trying not to worry.

I just want to share my experiences. I have a bmi of over 40 but despite this I am now 40+1 with my 3rd dc. All my pregnancies have been straight forward with low blood pressure, no GD etc. I've also had two straight forward labours of a 9lb & 8lb 13oz babies! So I now take being labelled high risk with a pinch of salt, higher risk does not mean things will go wrong. In fact I'm currently booked in for a home birth against medical advice because my only risk is my weight.

Hope you have a lovely straight forward pregnancy!

Haha yeah I do that and then feel a bit sick so have to try and find something. I seem to do okay (when I'm at work) until the evening and then start picking at junk food. I think my body is fed up with it now and would like something a Bit healthier.

Hi ladies, not much to add here but wanted to jump in to say hello. I am a size 20, BMI of 39 (though at my dating scan that was put up to 40?). My midwife has not made anything of this at all, i feel like she's treating me completely normally. I went to see a consultant last week and waited 2 hours to be told to be sure to eat my 5 a day. I was in about 10 minutes, had my blood pressure taken (which had only been done the day before at mw) and was told BP perfect, bloods perfect, urine perfect but best take a low dose asprin just in case...
Made additional scan appointments with the receptionist and I was done. I had been really concerned that they'd make me feel awful for being overweight, especially as I can't go back in time and get thin, but the MW has been fine and the consultant (or rather his assistant - i didn't see the actual consultant) seemed to be ticking boxes/not that bothered.
It is nice to see other larger mums to be on here though, I was feeling very alone in my "high risk" category!

Hey :)
I'm nearly 8 weeks... I have my first MW appt on Wednesday and I can't stop thinking about my weight. I'm 22, 5'8 and I weight 13 stone 12 so my BMI is like 29 just a little worried I'm gonna get shouted at :( first little one so have no idea what to expect :(

FoodieMum3 · 31/03/2014 16:54

Hi emzzy I think once your bmi is under 30 that you're in the overweight rather than obese category and not really considered high risk. Maybe someone can correct me on that?
Mine was 25-30 range last time and it was never mentioned, nor had I a GTT etc.

Glad everything went so well for you Karmalla.

I'm continuing to eat very healthily, just went off the wagon a bit yesterday for Mother's Day as we ate out but doing well today and did my walk.

Hi...am also glad I'm not the only bigger one (BMI 37)
Also very healthy and active. This is my 3rd DC.
MW couldn't believe my BMI was so high as I don't look it Hmm
I was doing SW before falling pregnant but find it very hard to stick with sickness etc. It's an amazing plan though and will be going back when bub is born for sure

SicknSpan · 31/03/2014 19:02

I'm 31 weeks now and was 3 stone overweight when this dc3 was conceived, unexpected baby! I lost a bit in the first trimester because of hyperemesis, but have regained it and am now 1st heavier than at the start. Think my BMI was 31 at booking, but dropped to 28 because of sickness. I'm 5'7 and normally a 16-18.

My midwife was fantastic from the start, said that as with many things in pregnancy my weight was just a factor for increased risk, not a guarantee that anything would go wrong. If anything, I just needed to focus on being healthy just like every single other mum to be no matter how slim. The healthcare team would be the ones thinking ahead about potential risks and diagnosis etc (eg gtt for GD) and whilst it wouldn't hurt me to know about them, she wouldn't recommend that I spent time worrying about it as happy mums make happy babies. I love that midwife!

I love my pregnant shape now- wear figure hugging dresses etc which I NEVER would when not pg! Go ahead and love your shape and size, it's a beautiful thing being pregnant.

I have a BMI of 35 at booking in. I feel so sad about it - I gained 5kg after a miscarriage in the autumn. I knew I was eating cake while I cried but I hadn't quite noticed it was that much cake! I really hope my pregnancy goes like the ladies here - I guess all I can do is cross my fingers and go for a few long walks!

weebigmamma · 04/04/2014 18:26

Try not to see 'high risk' as a judgey thing. It doesn't actually mean that your particular pregnancy is high risk either- it means they're treating you that way, and it's not because you're a bad person who got fat either- it has to do with statistics and those stats include people who are heavier than you, who have been sicker than you, who have other problems as well etc. Being treated as high risk should mean that you get extra good care, not that you feel judged for being fat. We're lucky to get more attention and that they're keeping an eye on us :-)
