Scans

i have decided to have some extra private scans, for various reasons really, because I lost a baby at 10 weeks, because i get very anxious and this helps me keep calm, because my friend had a 27 week private scan and it was only then that they noticed her placenta was not working properly and her baby was born by EMCS and finally, because I can afford it.

However, in my area, you don't get your 12 week scan until you are around 15 weeks. Its terrible. When i announced and my auntie asked if i had my scan already, my dad told her i had it done privately. She said 'She must have more money than sense!'. WTF??!! How judgmental?

What proportion of you have additional scans outside of the NHS ones?

MyName Reassurance scans before 14 weeks in my area are a reasonable £75 - Google reassurance scans for your area.

Paid £85 for a private one at 8+5, best money i'd spent as the 4 weeks prior to that i'd been on here reading about ms and mms sent me nuts and dh too, trouble with those due date month forums early on.

After scan i spent the next 3-4 weeks till nhs scan still with no morning sickness but able to enjoy it and feeling slightly smug about it now and tell family and close friends.

My advice if your thinking about it for early worries just do it.

I'd do it again only if they couldn't tell the sex from the nhs one, the waiting room at the 12wk one was full of the 20wk scan notices telling you it is not to tell you the gender so they won't go looking, only if they come across the area and it's obvious i suppose. That said i'm 16+4 now and the £45 gender scans are looking tempting.

MyNameIsKenAdams should say there are cheaper ones out there about the £50 mark, like the gender ones in my area, but reading about them they just confirm a pregnancy as they're not done by a trained midwife, i wanted to see that i was pregnant and be told if everything looked as it should be

We had one done at 8 weeks (Harley st) because we were going away for 10 weeks and I wanted reassurance before going. Then we had another one done in Australia (where we were) at 13 weeks for nuchal translucency because I would have missed it otherwise. this was through Medicare so bulk billed but may as well be private- it was amazing and worth every dollar. After having first DD in UK I have to say, you might have to pay for it but Aus is leaps and bounds ahead as far as care goes.
We had another done in Aus at 16 weeks to find out the gender as a sort of early Christmas present to ourselves (not that it mattered but I was non stop vomiting and needed something positive to hold onto)
Another one (NHS) done at 22 weeks at our hospital back in London- this was so crap and over in about 5 minutes... Very very basic. Would not (could not?) confirm placenta was in good position "oh it will probably move" (probably!??) etc...
I asked for a growth scan later on as Dd1 was 10.5lbs and difficult delivery- this was refused so we are booking another private scan with the same Harley st clinic as last time because clearly I have to take matters into my own hands.
Also bub was breach at last appointment and would like to confirm position closer to due date.
No way I am delivering a 10.5lbs breach baby vaginally!!
