Poll: are you having/had whooping cough vaccine?

I know it's an individual choice so I'm not asking for people's reasoning. I'm 34 weeks with dc2, never offered to me with dc1 so can't decide. I've read all the press and literature on it and still undecided. So just wondering how many women are actually taking it up.

Thought I'd try a bit of a poll. Yes or no?

I had it at about 34 weeks.
It was fine. No side effects for me; no changes in baby movement etc.

No. I'm 26 weeks and due end of June.

My gut just said No- and it's never let me down in the past.

I'm sure it's absolutely fine but i made my own decision on it and FWIW my GP and ob both agreed and said if pregnant they wouldnt get it either. Didnt get the flu jab either for the same reason. I do hope i've the right thing, as i know there are umpteen studies saying it's fine and the benefits outweigh the risks.

I've had it, baby seems to be fine in there, has had hiccups a lot recently though

Had it and felt strongly it was the right thing to do. There have been a few newborn deaths due to WC. I didn't feel I could take the risk.

I don't think there are umpteen studies saying it's fine chicamomma and I'm not sure the benefits necessarily outweigh the risk either. I didn't have it and generally I'm very pro vaccination. Off the top of my head, the risk of your baby getting whooping cough is something like 0.02% and there were I think 11 or 12 fatal cases in the whole country in 2012. The vaccine being used here hasn't been tested on pregnant women or long term which is what made me decide against it. In the US they use a different vaccine.

Don't take those figures as gospel, they are off the top of my head, it's been a while since I read the research. It's also just my personal opinion and decision, like for everyone

Yep, I had it and apart from an extremely sore arm for 6 days no problems

Yes. I was extra tired for a day and had a very sore arm for about a week, but no other side effects.

I had it at 32wks. Sore arm for couple days, and felt wiped out physically the same day, but that's it.

Yes, if you do have it, make sure it's not your 'main' arm IYSWIM - mine was v sore for a good 5 days afterwards and I struggled to lift it above my shoulder

I also can only sleep on my right side (only way I can get comfy) so it was a right pain having such a sore arm.

Yep I'm having it done on Friday (which will be 28+5) I feel very strongly that it's the right thing to do, and one of DH's friends (who he works with) gets whooping cough every year so didn't want to chance it.

Yes, having it next Thursday, I'll be 29+5. I believe it's been used safely in the US for many years and the FDA is very strict (due probably to culture of suing!)

I'm pro vaccine.

I'll definitely be having it. Not worth the risk of giving little one a potentially deadly disease.

Yes, I had it yesterday at 37+2. Whooping cough is a very nasty illness. This vaccine is the same one they give to preschool age children so a small dose also including tetanus, polio and diphtheria. The only reason there are not studies on pregnant women for this is because it's not ethical to test on pregnant women. My logic is if it was unsafe they wouldn't give it to 3-5yr olds.

But then I'm fairly pro-vaccine and think were lucky to live a Country where we get the choice.

No. I'm not happy with the complete lack of long term data (even for the similar, but different, vaccine used in the US since 2011), and there are good reasons why it's not ethical to test these things on pregnant women - there is still so much that just isn't known about foetal development or the effect they can have on the placenta. Plus, as someone mentioned above, the chances of the baby getting WC are slim - even at the height of the outbreak there were only approx. 430 babies that got WC of over 700000 born, and of these only a tiny proportion died. (Numbers off the top of my head, but can been found on the HPA website I think.)

I totally understand why people would have it though, and hope it's the right decision.
