I just recieved a letter from the hosp saying that on my last visit my blood tests results showed a raised sugar level so I have to go back in for a glucose intolerance test. Im 35 weeks pregnant and quite worried. We dont have anyone with diabetes in the family so no one I can ask any advice from. Will this affect the baby?
This has definately made shit day 10 times worst

Oh how worrying! My sister had this with her first baby.
Please be reassured that your baby will be okay, the main complication of Gestational Diabetes is a high birth weight, so they may need to induce early or peeform a Caesarian.
As you are 35 weeks already, then this shouldn't be a concern.
It usually disappears soon after the birth too.
Hopefully someone with personal experience of this will be able to offer more advice.

Affects on the baby are that it will potentiall y be larger than normal and may experience a dip in blood sugar levels after birth and require lots and lots of feeding to bring them back up again.

Had you eaten anything particularly sugary before the bloodtest? My midwife said that they get an awful lot of false positives because the mother is hungry and wolfs down a mars bar.

I had Gestational Diabetes (or glucose intolerance) with DS2 from, er, 32 weeks or so. I just had to watch my diet and went for a growth scan at 37 weeks.

Agree that as you're 35 weeks and (I assume) have had no glucose in your urine before now, I think potential problems are likely to be small.

if it helps, i had raised blood sugar and high birth weight babies, but no GD......

hope it all goes ok

It's not uncommon in pregnancy, which is why they check everyone for it. And the chances are that your levels aren't too bad because they test your urine for sugar at every visit and presumably that's been showing up clear?

If left unchecked, gestational diabetes can lead to a very large baby whose organs may be slightly less developed than normal (not usually a problem unless the baby is premature) and who is more predisposed towards obesity in later life. But it sounds as though if you have it at all yours is pretty mild and has been picked up pretty early, so you should be fine -- and you might not even have it as it's just one blood sugar reading.

From your point of view, gestational diabetes almost always goes away once you've given birth and would be controllable with diet and insulin until then.

The morning of the blood test I had weetabix with a bit of sugar. but I must admit lately I have been addicted to ice poles and slush puppies which I have been told have quite alot of sugar. Can this be the cause? I mean can this cause diabetes? I only had one urine test at 12 weeks and never had another one. Even though Ive been back to the hosp loads of times since then. Im really worried now and my appointment isnt untill friday so I have to wait nearly all week.
feel like crying! Everything been going so well and now this.

My DP swears its the slush puppies ive been having now I feel guilty that I caused this and it could have been avoided. Know im jumping the gun dont even know if I have it yet, just cant help it mind working overtime now.

Heavens no, it won't cause diabeties! It can cause a misleadingly high blood sugar level that's all.

Don't worry about it. It's very very common and really nothing to be worried about.
