So the issue is im due to go on maternity leave in just over 5 weeks (yay for me) but im finding it so hard to go in anymore. My job is fairly physical, is almost a 2 hour commute and my managers really unsupportive. Every day without fail she will find something to moan at me about or have a sly dig about my being pregnant, shes adding things to my job and generally just adding pressure where its not needed. Im only entitled to SMP and have had to move in with family, relationship with babys father ended horribly recently so im gonna be a single mum so I feel like I have to just suck it up and carry on with work to get every bit of money I possibly can. My family say I should get signed off sick through stress because its not good for me or baby and make me feel so guilty that im letting work stress me out. So the reason for this post is I wondered wwyd?

I'd go to your gp and see if you can get signed off.

If he says no, I'd g to your HR or health and safety dept and remind them of their legal responsibility to you.
Are you in the UK?

Pinkandwhite · 06/03/2014 23:25

Oh poor you, that sounds awful. If I was you, I would get myself signed off. Sorry you're having to deal with all that. There's nothing for you to feel guilty about though.

That's also a potential case for discrimination against you in the workplace whilst pregnant. She should not be talking to you like that. There is legislation that employers need to follow, including allowing for more flexibility at work. Make a note of her comments and the problems you have faced and speak to hr. Women like this make me Angry

And get signed off ASAP! Sorry you are going through this.

Plateofcrumbs · 07/03/2014 07:26

In relation to getting signed off, just be aware that from 36 weeks onward if you are signed off sick your employer can automatically start you maternity leave.

StarsInTheNightSky · 07/03/2014 07:29

I'm not sure how many weeks gestation you will be when you were planning to take maternity leave, but keep in mind that no workplace can force you to start maternity leave until you are 36 weeks pregnant, so if I were you I'd get signed off sick.
Most doctors are very reasonable about it, but if you see one who isn't, try making an appointmnt for a different doctor and try again until you find a sympathetic one.

Your boss' attitude is disgusting, I would speak to her boss, or HR if you can, otherwise, have you tried talking to her directly about it and telling her that it's discrimination and that she needs to back off?

Really sorry you're going through all of this op Sad x.

To make things easier for me I left at 29 weeks as soon as I was allowed. It means I still get 9 months off with baby and and extra month using hols.

I left early for same reasons. Work seemed to be good at first but the novelty wears off and quite frankly they didn't give a shit towards the end seeing me struggle.

Try and get signed off. Baby and you are more important. I honestly don't no how your doing a two hour commute.

Get a diary and record EVERY incident. Time, date and what was said.

  • best advice I ever got from my mum

Keep any emails etc. and always try to respond in writing where possible
