How much paternity leave will your dp/dh take?

Hi all, my dp had planned on taking two/three weeks from when baby was born however he has just been offered and accepted a new job which is better all round and i completely support as it means no more night shifts! But he starts his new job on 17th march and my due date is 10th march so if baby arrives on time he will have one week and if baby late then possibly no time atall at home. I will have support from my mum etc...
So i was just wondering what your other halves will be doing?

He took the two weeks, and will take two months when I go back to work. I'm the main wage earner, so we need my full wage more than his. It sucks for me, but I'm pleased that he gets some quality time with our boy.

mummy it was fine without dh - I didnt know any different and just got on with it. my mum visited once a week. I went to loads of breastfeeding groups (quite glad we struggled with feeding in a wierd way), met lots of new people and had coffee/lunch out most days. I just kept myself busy and out of the house for a whole year as I found ds easier to deal with when socialising than being home alone.

Mummytobe2014 · 01/03/2014 21:24

I do hope to get out the house and to groups etc it was the initial first weeks i was thinking about and especially if i end up with c section but im sure it will work itself out.
Its interesting though seeing how other families arrange it etc it varies quite a bit.
Thank you all for commenting Smile

10 days- the maximum paternity leave where we live Smile

MoominIsWaitingToMeetHerMiniMe · 01/03/2014 22:50

None. If he's called into work the day after the baby is born, he'll have to go in. Sad

MrsGiraffe12 · 02/03/2014 06:53

My DH is very lucky in that he gets 1 week full pay for paternity leave. Then he's going to take 1 weeks annual leave. Statutory paternity pay wouldn't pay the mortgage :-(

mrsmugoo · 02/03/2014 08:11

DH is self employed but he is taking 2 weeks - maybe not totally "off" but certainly at home, with instructions to clients and staff in the office that his priority will be me and baby during that time.

Writerwannabe83 · 02/03/2014 09:26

He was going to take just the one week but now I've been booked in for a CS he will be taking the two as it's likely I'm going to be very dependent on him.

ikea - that's an amazing set up you have in your country!! Smile

2 weeks paternity leave which is at full pay then 2 weeks annual leave on top.

shadack · 02/03/2014 11:20

Christ all these men taking weeks off my DP is taking 2 days the day of the birth and the day after you are all very very very lucky ladies
if i end up in hospital after a c-section i will be on my own after the second day
He works in an industry where you have to work when the work is there if he doesn't show up someone will complain or take his place
We raised the issue first with his boss as it would be illegal for him to say no to paternity but if DP didn't show his boss would loose several thousand in takings each day which would also mean the business would suffer so we decided that it was better for him to work and be in his boss's good books x

Mummytobe2014 · 02/03/2014 11:28

My dp will only be home if baby comes before he starts new job on 17th, edd is 10th so if he is late dp will not be home with me.
If lo comes early we will be lucky to have some time together x

I'm curious, what if a same sex couple adopts or has a surrogate etc?

Me and OH we're discussing it, he gets a week paid paternity and we just thought it would be horrifically unfair if two men foe example, were only allowed a week each...

Anyone know, like I said, we are just curious. Smile

greentshirt · 02/03/2014 12:40

There is adoption leave if you are adopting and leave can be shared now so shouldn't be an issue.

chattychattyboomba · 02/03/2014 12:42

DH is self employed and will not take time off as such but will try to get as much done from home as possible

HannahG315 · 02/03/2014 12:44

Thanks :)

Reading this I feel very fortunate dp will take 4-6 weeks when dc2 if born in Sept.

He will take two weeks paternity, then 2-3 weeks time back for overtime (he's working extra shifts between now and then to accrue this) then a couple of weeks annual leave. Then he'll go back on a reduced week until xmas.

He works in a low skilled job which is easy to find cover for and we have plenty of time to plan and save for it. I think it's sad many dads can't take more time off.

I'll take 9-10months off work then when I return dp will do bulk of childcare because his shift starts at 3pm.

AJay28 · 03/03/2014 13:09

DH is taking the 2 weeks paternity pay - though his work are going to try and pay him 1 weeks paternity in 1 month and then the other in the next so that we don't have one very low pay month.
He is then taking 2 weeks annual leave and then 2 weeks of doing 2 or 3 days a week after that.
He has been saving up his annual leave/doing overtime for the past 6 months so that we can afford to have the most time together.

neversleepagain · 03/03/2014 13:11

DP took a weeks paternity leave when our twins were born.
