Linea negra - does it denote anything?

With dd I had an obvious linea negra for the second half of the pregnancy, which sort of flaked off after [nice! ]. This time there is noobvious sign [am now 31 weeks]. We have been expecting a girl due to scan and generally feelings, but the consultant today said it sounded like a boy! Does the presence or not of a linea negra denote anything?

I am 35 weeks with baby no 2, and haven't had linea nigra in either of my pgs.

Im on pregnancy number 4 and never had one. I always though it was something to do with skin tone. Im a ginge and very light skinned. Probably totaly wrong but there you go.

I had one in my pregnancy with DS and not with DD. Don't think it really means much.

I had one in my first pregnancy with DS and then nothing in my second pregnancy until after I'd had DD when it showed up very visibly.

My understanding is that the linea nigra marks the division of the abdominal walls which separate as your uterus grows. I thought it was a pigmentation thing. I had it with all my pregnancies as far as I can remember (3 boys and one girl so nothing to do with sex of child) and it was just a pigmentation line like a mole so I am not sure what you mean when you talk of your other line flaking off after pregnancy.

The only lines I got on my belly throughout pg were big whopping bloody stretchmarks.

thanks for the replies - glad I'm not the only one who didn't have it everytime. By flaking off I mean that it didn't fade evenly, but rather in patches until it had gone completely! Maybe sounds less grim when described like that!
