Heart-shaped uterus??!

Hi Everyone,

I'm 8 weeks + 5 and had an early scan on Weds to check everything was ok. We had a mmc just over a year ago and it had been hard to believe that things might be ok this time around. Huge relief to see a heartbeat and know that things are going well! :-)

The sonographer told me that I have a heart-shaped womb though which is something I'd never heard of. She was surprised that the NHS hadn't told me last time I was pregnant.

Does anyone know anything about abnormally shaped wombs and what risk they carry? I guess it's something I could ask about at my 12 week scan....

I also have a heart shaped. I’m currently pregnant with my second child, 11 weeks. I first found out I had a heart shape in high school bc I have terrible periods and had cysts on my ovaries, I had an ultrasound and was told then. I apparently forgot or didn’t think too much of it my last pregnancy bc I never researched it nor was I re informed that I had one by the ultrasound tech. At my anatomy appt my daughters femurs were measuring small so I was being monitored by mfm a few times and at every prenatal appt I was getting an ultrasound to check the growth. She had always measured a week behind schedule (whole body with extra small femurs) I also had Braxton Hicks contractions starting in the beginning of the second trimester and always had cramps throughout my whole pregnancy. My water broke two days before my due date, baby was head down but after 17 hour labor I had a c section due to her heart rate dropping with every contraction. She was 6lbs 8oz and her femurs were just fine. But with all of that said it makes so much sense that she was small and I had contractions throughout the whole time bc of limited space. I’m pregnant with my second and asked the ultrasound tech about my uterus shape and she did confirm it was heart shape. Immediately when I got home I researched everything and my anxiety is at an all time high knowing all the complications that can come. Regardless if I had a healthy pregnancy the first time I can’t help but worry. Maybe I can help someone have a piece of mind that I did have a full term birth, non breech, and no miscarriages so far. Wishing all of you the best of luck and sending all the best vibes!!

I’m so happy to find this post, and it’s been revived! I found out last month that I have a bicoronate uterus (and a cyst on my ovary) and honestly, I’ve been shattered. I know that I could have completely normal pregnancy, but I have had to completely change my vision of having children, now that I’m automatically high risk. I’m connected with a midwife who recommended a great OB that I’m going to see next month, so I appreciate whoever said make sure you get a good doctor. I’m wondering, has there been anything particularly helpful for women to deal with the anxiety/not knowing? I have basically come to terms with the idea that I may never have my own kids, and that I won’t know until I try, and I might have deformed children, and they will probably come early. I keep thinking about the pesticides and chemicals sprayed for the last few generations and how they effect reproductive health first...i feel like knowing more about WHY I’m like this would be comforting to me now.
Also, I found out because I have a transverse septum in my vagina that I am getting removed, which is the only reason I had an ultrasound. I guess I’m pretty lucky that I found out so early, before getting pregnant and all. I’m 27.

Do you know how severe your heart shape is? They told me I had a heart shape 12 years ago and when my OB saw that ultrasound from then she said it wasn’t something to be too concerned about. Wish I would have known that then to save me from my worries. So I would definitely make sure how severe your case is before you worry anymore. Many women give birth to healthy babies with severe/mild uterus shapes. I’m 20 weeks with my second child and my OB said since my uterus has been stretched from the first pregnancy the baby has enough room to grow, which is such a relief.

Hi! Ino this post is an old post but I am wondering if anyone would share some postive stories. I am 26 weeks pregnant (had 2 mc in the past, one being a twin pregnancy, never got past 12 weeks) all is going great in this pregnacy..fingers crossed. However i do have a bicornute uturus..completely split and baby is in the right 'horn' just needing some postive stories please xxx

Jellybean8 · 12/09/2020 18:21

@Jessem29 I just wondered how your pregnancy went? I realise this is an old thread but wondered if you minded sharing?

Jessem29 · 12/09/2020 18:58

@JellyBean8 hi lovely. I do not mind sharing at all. I had a lovely pregancy. I was classed as high risk but with covid didnt have as many checks as I should. They said I was able to have a natural delivery, but if baby was breach they woudnt be able to spin her (due to the womb being half the size) so would have to be a planned section. This was the case for me and a section was booked in. However my little one decided to not keep us waiting. My waters went on the 10th August at 11pm. I was 37 weeks and 5 days. Contractions started within 10 minutes and I was fully dilayed by 1.30am on the 11 August (37+6). As she was breach I was rushed to surgery for an emergency c section were she was delivered healthily and safely at 2.03am. I am currently sat feeding her and she is perfect. Have you been told you have the same? X

Jellybean8 · 12/09/2020 20:56

@Jessem29 thank you for sharing! Huge congratulations to you on your new arrival, that's such wonderful news 🥰 yes I've been told I have a bicornuate uterus but it was just sort of mentioned in passing at an early scan, went home and Googled and scared myself to death. Hoping to discuss it further with my midwife but hearing your story has really helped with my current panic. Thank you again for sharing, I think in these cases where it's fear of the unknown just speaking to someone who has been through the same thing can be really reassuring xx

Jessem29 · 12/09/2020 21:12

@Jellybean8 if you ever want to chat please message me or add me on Facebook. Its quite rare so always nice to speak to someone. Please do not worry too much. Mine was split almost in two, only attached by a small bit at the bottom. You will probably be classed as high risk due to this (more scans, so bonus) the main thing I was told is that you can go earlier or have a low birth weight my little girl was 2 weeks early and 6lb5. also quick labours. That is true haha. Not always a bad thing! I loved my labour and my experience. Depending on how split it is they will explain that baby is in the right or left horn (you won't have an odd bump dont worry) honestly, its just something they have to tell you and just your dna I guess! Congrats on your pregnancy! Try and enjoy it. It honestly is the best thing in the world xxx

Jellybean8 · 12/09/2020 21:40

@Jessem29 thank you so much! That's so kind! Xx

Symphony87 · 12/09/2020 22:42

I have a heart shaped uterus too. It was discovered last month after my scan showed what looked like a cornual ectopic pregnancy. Was rushed into surgery to have the pregnancy removed and they discovered the odd shape. Didn’t tell me until the next morning that everything was okay in the end so had a horrible night. I’ve not been told anything about it apart from baby is sitting to the left and the increased risk for preterm birth.

Do the midwives talk to you about it? Or do you have to request to speak to someone?

Jessem29 · 12/09/2020 23:29

@Symphony87 hi lovely. I was told yeras before pregnancy. It was picked up during a full body scan after a car accident. Pre term labour and low birth weight was what they explained my risk as. My baby was in my left horn. Born at 37+6 weighing 6lb5. Shes amazing and perfect. I was so worried but I had nothing to worry about. She was breach and ended up having a emergency section as she came when she was ready and I laboured very quickly (delivered her foot) but please try not to worry. My uturus is split right down and only attached at the very bottom! Xx

Jessem29 · 12/09/2020 23:31

Also just too add. I had scans near the end of my pregnancy and the sonographer struggled to see the split as the womb streched so much! Xx

Fam85 · 09/12/2020 19:44

Hi junipernani. If possible could you give me an insight into the names of consultants who specialise in bicornate uterus pregnancies?

LouB0303 · 09/08/2021 16:33

Hi, I’m 36 and I have been suffering from a MMC which has taken 3 failed attempts at removal and then a final hysteroscopy and removal procedure to remove left over pregnancy tissue. I pray this is actually the final time for me so that I can move on as this all started 4 months ago. This time the consultant has agreed to do me a 2 week follow up scan to confirm, but prior to this I just got sent away and told they’d been a success. They weren’t :( on the last scan I had the consultant told me I had a slight heart shaped womb in a very casual and flippant way. Stupidly I googled it and have been a mess ever since at the results of found! I would just like to thank all of you on this thread for putting my mind at rest with your positive outcomes. I seriously doubted whether I would be able to try again due to all of the risks and now I pray that in the near future I can finally try again to start my family :)

LouB0303 · 09/08/2021 16:34

Just to add, I know this is a very old thread, but nontheless it’s helped me!

Duckington · 09/08/2021 16:39

I have one! I knew about it before I was pregnant as I’d had scans before for other reasons (unexplained abdominal pains which have since disappeared)

When I told the midwife, same as a pp, she just nodded in a “oh that’s interesting” sort of way. No extra monitoring, and DC was born full term, no issues.

Although my bump was more on one side, as that’s the side of the “heart” they were in

LouB0303 · 10/08/2021 17:05

:) thank you for this ❤️

choccrumpet · 10/08/2021 18:02

I'm currently 12 weeks pregnant with a bicornuate uterus, septum going down the middle but not sure how far. I'm in the UK so am consultant led and have 2 extra scans with him but other than that nobody has said anything about risks (apart from higher chances of baby being breech) and I don't believe I'm a high risk pregnancy, it hasn't been marked on my file.

I found out before the pregnancy so was fully aware, GP encouraged to keep trying to in most cases it's probably not as bad as google makes it out to be. But of course better to know and have the extra monitoring.

Baby currently in right horn, obviously worried about its development and space to grow but nothing I can do but hope for the best and that my midwife and consultant know what they're doing.

LouB0303 · 10/08/2021 21:52

Again thank you for your stories! It’s the internet that absolutely gutted me! After going through a MMC that’s taken 4 months to totally remove everything and several infections; then reading the internet I truly thought that was it for me! Feel like I was just too old and that surely I’d having a late miscarriage or poorly baby. Again, I can’t thank you enough! I am full of hope and positivity again now ❤️
