Is a hat really needed?

Pretty much every baby I have seen has a hat on. Is there any need for me to buy one...? I've got vests, sleepsuits and scratch mittens but don't see why I need to buy a hat once he/she is born.

Ds1 was born at home, no mention of a hat.

Ds2 was born in hospital. Virtually the first thing the midwife did was put a hat on him.

Hats for outside in the winter or cold days is essential IMO. But not inside. I bought hats that did up under the chin, the only way to keep them on!

Not clear from the op whether you mean at the hospital or generally to take a newborn out . I didn't at hospital but definitely to take them out. No hats indoors though!

My baby is 3 weeks old and I still struggle to get a hat on her little head! All the sleep/snowsuit I have have got hoods and I find that a lot easier... Otherwise the hats just sit perched on her head like little turbans

midwife stopped us from leaving hospital with DS due to lack of hat as super efficient DH had packed it and taken cases to the car. had to buy hideous hand knitted one from league of friends before we could escape, so I'd have one if I were you.

I got two in asda for £2.50. Yep they're cute as hell and yep, babies get cold. Air con was stuck on in our freezing delivery suite and, despite instant skin to skin, ds ended up in neo natal for a night cos he was cold. A hat could have saved that. Scratch mitts cos babies seriously love poking their eyes out!
