I wasn't planning on getting one but just interested to hear what other people think

I used one to bath mine in the living room so that I could involve my hudband while he was glued to euro 2012 on tv. He can sod off this time. I've bought a little reclined seat that I can bath bubs at the same time as the boy.

Take home message? I wouldn't bother. A washing up bowl from wilkos will do the trick if it's the portable aspect you're after.

I used one. Just a cheap one. The bathroom in that flat was absolutely freezing so we used one to bath pfb in the living room. The next couple of dcs went straight in the main bath with their siblings. The bathroom in this house where ds2 was born is colder than the one in the flat too. He seems to have survived. Grin with one child though it van be more economical to just fill a baby bath instead of having to fill a big one deep enough. Once you have more children you are filling the main bath anyway.

Thanks all. I know they are cheap but I'm reluctant to buy a big lump of plastic if I don't need to.

We didn't at first because everyone said how useless they were. We bathed DD in the kitchen sink for about 6 weeks, and found it very awkward. She was so slippery, unable to sit up, so was always supported by one hand and I couldn't really wash her effectively. It wasn't any fun! So we bought a plastic bath with a foam grip back support and a ledge that she kind of sat on, and it was great! Just plonked it inside our normal bath, and she laid back so I had both hands free. It was much better. We used it until about 7 months and now she's just in the normal bath because she likes to swim about. My Mum also had one of those bath seats which are also great, and do effectively the same thing. They take up less space too. We just stored ours in the bath and let it drain. We just removed it when we needed to use the bath. Simple.

We have the fisher price aquarium bath and wouldn't be without it. We use it in the bath, but that was the intention. It's easy to fill and empty (there's a plug on the bottom). It has a sling in it so baby feels secure when small and when they grow out of that there's a bar across the bottom that stops them sliding down the bath. DD still loves being in it at 8 months. We bath DD every night, so we've had our money's worth. When we went away we didn't have room for it and borrowed one of those bath seat things; DD hated it.

A DF lent me a plastic bath support, it was massively easier than trying to support the babies head in a baby bath, in the bottom of a big bath, in a postage stamp sized bathroom.

Also you can put baby one end, sensible toddler the other. (DD1 is was very sensible about baths, because she didnt like being splashed either. She had a death stare for older DCs in swimming pools).

hedgehogy · 20/02/2014 15:16

You don't need to support baby's head with the fisher price one (we haven't needed to support DD in it at all).

whatsagoodusername · 20/02/2014 15:20

We had one, a John Lewis collapsable plastic one which lived in the big bath. It was easier at first because it was quicker to fill up and if necessary we could move it around. We used it for a few months - probably until DS could sit up. But it certainly wasn't necessary and we didn't bother to use it with DS2 - just put him in the bath with DS1 Grin

I haven't got one. I had one for dc1 but I didn't use one for dc2 and won't get one for dc3.

Oblomov · 20/02/2014 16:32

Don't bother. I used the main bath with both ds's from day 1.
And I liked getting baby in the bath with me.

thereisnoeleventeen · 20/02/2014 17:57

I've never got on with them tbh, I just get DH to pass me the newborn while I am in the bath...he collects them and wraps them in a towel when they are bathed.

They don't get bathed every day either as I think it's much better for their skin...DC3 was bathed the least as DH was working longer hours by then so it was about once a week.

SaucyJack · 20/02/2014 18:01

Depends where you're going to bath the baby.

The good thing about a baby bath is that you can use it downstairs.

weebairn · 20/02/2014 18:02

I have an ikea one and used it quite a lot. I have laminate floors and I liked bathing her by the big windows, it was lovely. My bathroom is small and has no windows.

When she was older we had a lot of fun splashing around in it on hot days.

I don't think you need one though. I mostly bathed with her (which is lovely).

As a baby I probably only washed her once a week or less anyway. It's not always good for sensitive newborn skin to wash them too often. We do it every day now (in the big bath, she's 16 months) because she loves it so much!

Mercedes519 · 20/02/2014 18:04

I'd suggest posting on FB or Freecycle 'does anyone have a baby bath they don't need anymore' you'll be inundated and if you don't like it or use it you can gift it on.

redcaryellowcar · 20/02/2014 18:09

we have a basic john Lewis one which cost around to10, ds is now 2.7m and still uses it, saves a lot of water, we now use it in the bath so easy to fill and empty and contains some of the splashing, when he was tiny (pre five months) we used on a waterproof mat in front of our warmest radiator, as that house was colder than the one we are in now. when he was small he just had a few jugfuls of water which didnt make it so heavy i couldn't lift it to empty, i know a lot of people are sceptical but i think they are great!

HelenHen · 20/02/2014 20:04

We had a big one and it was a pain in the arse to fill and empty every time! We also only bathe about every 5 day's or so unless necessary... And just water... Their skin is so delicate! For dc2 I'm just gonna buy a basin. I wanna be able to do it on the kitchen table cos it's easier and I have back issues, so hopefully that will help

scarlettsmummy2 · 20/02/2014 20:28

No. I just used a new basin when babies really small and then moved onto normal bath.

singlespeedlass · 20/02/2014 20:30

I did have one that had a plug for easy emptying. Was useful as it saved water, and made a good paddling pool or beer cooler in the garden!!

Having said that I won't be buying a new one for DC2. We'll just pop him in the bath with DS1.

ZenNudist · 20/02/2014 20:42

I got a John Lewis basic one for ds1, lent to a friend who didn't return it so repurchased for ds2 with a new go insert to make it easy & comfy to bathe him.

There's no way he'd fit is a washing up bowl. I like to just put a little water Ina small container to bath him.

Ds1 splashing & having fun so not really appropriate for new born bath time.

blushingmare · 21/02/2014 11:52

I did with DD. Had a baby bath with a bath seat in it, until she outgrew it, just because it was less wasteful with water. Won't this time though as baby will probably just share DD's bath.

Artandco · 21/02/2014 14:44

Dh says his nicest memories are of both boys as newborns asleep on his chest in the bath. It was a lovely way for them to bond and get skin to skin seeing as I was breastfeeding so he couldn't help there.

Polyethyl · 21/02/2014 14:49

I used the handbasin when she was newborn. Now we bathe together. I love playing rubber ducky games as much as she does.
