Scan in EPU - do I tell work?

Hi everyone.

What a roller coaster of emotion over a weekend...

I was 7 days late on Friday so took a test which was positive. I took another test on Saturday morning which was also positive. Yesterday evening I had tummy pains like a period and had some spotting, so I phoned the out of hrs GP who has booked me in for a scan at the EPU.

I will obviously need to have time off work. I'm a teacher so I can't just book the day off. I am unsure whether to tell them as it's so early in my pregnancy, but then in another way at least they will be aware whatever happens after the scan on Thursday.

If anyone has any advice I would be grateful.

Can you just tell your line manager or whoever sorts cover rather than all of smt etc? Good luck hope it's good news

In the past told the hr manager and the specific member of SLT who deals with cover. It made it a lot easier as they knew and could field unwanted questions.

In this pg I have fortnightly scans and knowing my history they've been supportive.

If your head is approachable tell them, they then have to be discreet if that is what you want. They can then give you the time and put off others from asking questions.
I told my head early on so that I can go to any appointments without feeling awkward. Also my position has health and safety implications as I'm lone teacher on a split site.

ive had to go to epu 3 times. first time I told work it was a last min hosp appointment and they were fine. next 2 times I said where I was going and they were willing to let me take longer than I needed

You're right about them putting off others from asking questions. The lady I spoke to said that she wasn't sure how long it would take as it would obviously all depend on the scan results, so at least if I tell them they will hopefully understand that, and whatever is to happen they will know what is going on.

I went to the EPU last Thursday. Had scan done within about 30 mins of appointment time, then waited 90 mins to see doctor for 5 mins. I'd expect to be there for half a day.

I'd rather not tell work, at least not until after the scan. A compromise might be urgent gynaecological scan. That's truthful.

I've had hyperemedis since week 7 of pg so just had to tell them. Told head of dept and line manager and they were very discreet. It's not like they're going to tell the kids!

I'm a teacher, the head, the SMT and my head of dept knew. It made it a bit easier when things went wrong if I'm honest. Although apparently, some members of staff have been muttering about the time off I've had. 4 days in total post my miscarriage - I'm glad I told the SMT as they're supporting me through. It does now mean I feel obliged to go in even though I feel ill. Some people need to get a life!
