Breast feeding / milk flow question

Hi all

Need a little advice. My son is 12 days old

Breast fed exclusively until he lost too much weight, so I breasfed, tried to express and then topped up with formula on the advice from the MW. I then got poorly nipples (ð???) so could only feed and express from left hand side. This has only been a couple of days but my boobs are very squishy, very light with very little milk in them at all. I thought it would've taken longer for milk to go, I am desperate to carry on giving him my breast milk for as much as possible. I'm trying to express to get them going but wondered if you had any tips on getting it flowing again x

Breast and bottle feeding discussion.

You'll probably get more specific help if you post there.

Have you tried different feeding positions like rugby balling him rather than cradling? I found switching round my feeding positions really helped with DD. (Not sure why but I think it's something to do with them stimulating different milked ducts could be wrong about that though)
Also making sure I'd drunk/eaten properly myself helped too. Maybe you could see a lactation specialist who could check your DS latch etc.

Lansinoh really helped with my cracked nipples.

Kellymom is a fantastic website full of bf answers. Also, expressing in the morning is the most productive - pm expressing usually doesnt yield much. Have you thought about a nipple shield for sore side?

Squishy breasts shouldn't necessarily mean a problem with milk supply, they are only normally hard/engorged when the milk comes in and if supply exceeds demand for any reason (ie. you suddenly skip a feed). Once feeding is established they should feel softer as your body learns to produce what your baby needs. I know that them feeling softer/lighter can be a worry as I felt exactly the same.

Would also second the recommendation for Kellymom and also La Leche League for great advice and support. If you are worried could you call the hospital that you delivered at? Many have a lactation consultant who can support you, I saw one and she diagnosed my dd's tongue tie, her advice and tips while we waited for the snip were hugely valuable and reassuring.

Definitely eat and drink enough. I genuinely found cake helped.
I don't eat thar much, and cake was an easy and yummy way to get calories albeit probably not the healthiest way
