When did you stop travelling too far from home...?

I'm 33 weeks and we have got dss for the half term in feb where I'll be 36/37 weeks pg. He lives 200 odd miles away, and would mean dh and me sharing driving but being away from home for a day or two. Its my first baby and I'm a bit nervous being so far away from home. When did you stop travelling away too far from your local hospital/home

I'm only 30 weeks and pretty much already have! Not going anywhere I don't have to really, not because I'm particularly worried but because I just don't feel like it. We might have a wedding to go to when I'm about 38 weeks but haven't made any decisions yet, will have to see how I feel nearer the time. DH already not going on the stag do just in case but mainly because I'm a bit clingy at the moment!

I didn't stop. I just took my labour bag and ante-natal notes with me if I was going more than an hour's travel away from home.

This is my first so I have absolutely no idea what signs to look out for if I were to go into labour early too Blush I'm so apprehensive

I was supposed to stop travelling for work at 30 weeks, in reality I stopped travelling abroad at 31 weeks. I carried on travelling for personal reasons until 37 weeks, had baby at 39 weeks. I was planning to travel at 39+6 (yesterday) but I was trapped by a newborn baby instead Grin

I took notes with me though. Giving birth in a strange hospital didn't worry me. I was more cautious about the effect long journeys had in my physically.

Can dss come to you?

K8eee · 02/02/2014 09:11

This is probably something really stupid that I'm thinking, but if I were to give birth away from home (which I really don't want) how do I get the baby home with no car seat?! Blush Do I have to take the car seat everywhere I go...?

His mum wont consider that I'm pregnant and meet half way Hmm only if we make a huge fuss and speak to her parents but then she'd be being bullied into it

You would need a car seat, so either take it strapped into the car already if you're travelling quite a distance or accept that you may need to buy one if anything happened :)

If you're still comfortable driving at that stage, I'd just say throw your hospital bag and notes into the back of the car, and car seat strapped in. Personally I was so uncomfortable in a car at that stage when I had DS that I couldn't have done it - would have been sending DH with strict instructions that if anything started happening he would turn round and drive home straight away no matter what!

We didn't go far after about 36 weeks, but largely because I was pregnant during a bad winter and the snow and ice made things extra risky. I stopped driving myself around then too as I was too fat!

Next weekend we're going for a last weekend away as a couple (for a while!!) which will be a 5 hour train journey - I'll be 35 weeks. I'll take my notes and am planning on using the bag I'm taking as my hospital bag so that will be packed when I get back. Then no more long journeys from home!

saffstel · 02/02/2014 10:03

I went on holiday (couldn't get out of it) about 100 miles away from home when I was 38 weeks with dd1.

I just made sure I had my notes, bag packed and knew where the nearest hospitals were, and had maxi cosi set up in car.

Frizz1986 · 02/02/2014 11:11

I never needed to travel very far but did go to watch a movie an hour away at 36 weeks. We drove (would normally take the train) and made sure we had hospital notes, car seat and bags in the car in case.
I think as long as you are up to it energy wise and make sure you stop to stretch your legs and pee and you take a car seat, notes and hospital bag its fine.
It really depends on how you feel about the posibilty of giving birth in a different hospital as if something were to happen on the way you might have to take a detour (take a sat nav if you have one so you can get to a hospital)
I gave birth (my first) at 37+4 but i did suspect that she was coming soon as i started getting very uncomfortable with a lot if braxton hicks.

I was just about to start a thread on the same topic. I have been offered an amazing one-off opportunity to attend an event which would really help my career but it would mean me flying to London, taking a train and staying overnight at 33weeks (in 4 weeks time). Don't know what to do. Feel I should take it but I feel quite uncomfortable now as it is. Hadn't even thought about going into labour early lol!

mrsmugoo · 02/02/2014 11:35

I would do that if it was me, you're very unlikely to go into labour at 33 weeks.take your notes though, in case you did need any sort of medical attention for any reason.

weebigmamma · 02/02/2014 11:39

Thanks Mrsmugoo. I am probably being over-cautious and a little nervous about being in Big London on my own lol.

greentshirt · 02/02/2014 11:41

Weebigmamma it's probably perfectly safe and you will be fine. I just couldn't be bothered that would be my issue. At this point I wait until I'm completely desperate for a wee because it's too much effort to get up!

mrsmugoo · 02/02/2014 11:45

At this point any time I need a wee it goes from zero to desperate anyway!

weebigmamma · 02/02/2014 11:52

lol yes. I had a day out shopping with my daughter yesterday and planned the whole thing based around toilet stops.

Rosieliveson · 02/02/2014 11:59

I didn't travel out of town after about 33 weeks.
I was put off by a friend who went into labour early so baby had to stay in a hospital over 2 hours from home for 4 weeks!!

That must be very rare though!
