Hubby gave me night nurse by mistake

I'm 17weeks pregnant and have the most wretched cold. Hubby thought he was giving me paracetamol but they were infact night nurse capsules. I'm getting myself quite worried. Has anybody else taken them during pregnancy?

From the NHS Website:

"If you are trying to become pregnant, are pregnant, or are breast-feeding, you should seek medical advice before taking this medicine."

That does suggest to me that it's not an absolute no no. HTH

Im a nurse so i have a drug book at home. Admittedly its 4years old so i can't grantee its accuracy but this is what it says:
The three key ingredients in night nurse are dextromethorphan, paracetamol and promethazine. dextromethorphan is a mild opiod analysic and should be avoided in the 3rd trimester as they reduce respiration (breathing rate) of a newborn but the concerns of this drugs use are based on regular use so a one off shouldnt cause too much trouble.
promethazine is a type antihistimine drug (anti allergy) and there is no evidence to suggest and concerns in pregnancy with this particular version.

As im not a pharmacist don't take my word as law but its the book nurses and Drs use to figure this kind of question out.
Hope that helps

I'm also 17 weeks struggling with severe back pain yesterday the doctor I saw did say I could take ibuprofen if paracetamol isn't touching it. I'm not going to because I don't want ti take the risk but I'm sure it's very unlikely 1 dose of night nurse could do much harm...

Great post smileyjess Smile

You'll be fine x

Foxeym · 01/02/2014 09:31

That's really weird icklekid because when I got signed off with bad SPD, my GP said under no circumstances could I take ibruprofen, paracetamol only. So much conflicting advice, no wonder we are so confused

snoggle · 01/02/2014 09:35

foxey I think with ibuprofen it depends on trimester. Could easily be wrong, but I seem to remember reading it's a no in 1st and 3rd trimesters but can be taken in 2nd if really needed/ under GP advice.

ILoveDHIDo · 01/02/2014 09:37

Icklekid My FIL is a consultant obstetrician and he told me not to take ibruprofen only paracetamol with lots of water

Bue · 01/02/2014 12:22

The risk with ibuprofen really is only in the third trimester - it can cause one of the fetal cardiac structures to close prematurely. There is no evidence of risk before the third trimester and in fact if you look at a packet it says avoid in third tri only. In other countries it is considered fine until then. In the UK we tend to be really overcautious about medication, mainly due to the legacy of thalidomide.

BEEwitched · 01/02/2014 12:24

Yeah, with ibu NHS advise is to avoid completely - my German pregnancy books say it's fine to take up to the end of 2nd trimester.

But then, my midwife said the NHS guidelines change really often.

eurochick · 01/02/2014 18:27

I have been told that ibruprofen should be avoided in the first tri as it can cause womb contractions and increase the mc risk.

Ilovekittyelise · 01/02/2014 20:02

hi

no professional advice here but if you have only taken once im sure you will be fine; im sure even with definite no no items you need to build up over prolonged exposure to significantly increase the risk of issues.

try not to worry more proof of how much of a waste of space men are
