Nursing Chairs Help!

Hi All,

I've seen a few posts on this topic but still haven't been able to make up my mind! I'd love a proper nursing chair, I have a really bad back and can't sit on our couch for more than half an hour. We have ikea poang chairs which are quite comfy but still need a few cushions in places and will no doubt need more for my arms when the little one arrives - I hate the idea of having to adjust loads of cushions in the middle of the night. I'll use one of these for downstairs feeds but am considering a gliding nursing chair for upstairs.

The problem is, I've tried the Haywood chair in John Lewis, and while I absolutely loved it and didn't want to get up, I was worried that the back didn't quite come up high enough to support my head (I'm only 5'5"), and the arms seemed quite high - the arms were comfy while I was sitting there but I wonder if after half an hour or so of settling into the chair my arms would start to ache? The chair is quite narrow and so I don't know if I would be able to take my arms down and squeeze them inside the space.

Some of the chairs on kiddicare website look like they're taller but they only have the total dimensions so it's hard to tell. All the arms and seat widths look fairly similar. Are there any that are particularly good or different? Is the haywood comfortable for long frequent feeds?

We live in west London and don't have a car so I'm not aware of anywhere reachable to try out the chairs in advance. Also find there might be a difference between sitting there for ten mins in a shop and sitting for hours with a baby...

Any thoughts/ideas welcome!

Thank you :-)

Blimey - I hadn't taken anything like this into consideration. I just bought a 2nd hand gliding one off eBay - it's lovely Grin

I sat in it when my husband bought it home (it was a collection only item), thought it was comfy and so I'm happy enough Smile

Have a look on Kiddicare. They used to sell lots of these, that came with the glider stool too for around £100. I'm sure lots are on ebay too.
We have one which we had for our DC who is now 8. Still have it I. Te bedroom and sit in it for bed time stories. Has been great.

If you're worried about your arms aching while feeding then get a breastfeeding pillow. You can get them cheaper than that, was just using that as an example. I found them brilliant, also good to put behind baby when it's learning to sit on its own.

Also, yes, the gliding chairs are very comfy IME, I wouldn't be without one.

Personally I've found my nursing chair quite uncomfortable after any length of time. I got mine from kiddicare after my ds2 was born (he's 2.5 now) but although it's still in the kids play room I have little intention of using it this time. The ones I've used while in a Mothercare nursing room were much more comfortable than the one we have but they also cost a small fortune, might be worth a look though? As Writer said maybe get a secondhand one on ebay or gumtree so if you don't like it you don't feel you've wasted too much money on it?

I found a lovely secondhand armchair that I'll be using this time. In the past I've always found it more comfortable to sit on the sofa with two pillows from our bed behind me to give me a more upright posture.

I absolutely second getting a nursing pillow like a Boppy pillow or similar they are so good for supporting baby and meaning you don't get arm ache!

For night feeds I'd suggest you learn how to latch while lying down because trust me this is a sanity saver. I didn't feel that sleep deprived in the first 6 months after having ds2 because I would lie down to feed and be resting while he was feeding. I also then wasn't worried about falling asleep while sitting in a chair with him.

Thanks for all the replies! I think the nursing chairs are really comfy, based on that one that I tried, I'm just wondering if people have specific advice re certain models having longer backs to support your head or wider seats/lower arms really.
We've been given a boppy by a friend so got that covered, the aching arms thing was more to do with the fact that the arms of the chair seem high so was wondering if having your arms that high (even if not supporting baby) would be achey after a while.

The ebay/gumtree thing would be great, but unfortunately not having a car rules us out as we've found second hand stuff is never delivered :-(

Could a friend not help you pick one up? Or you could offer the petrol money to the person selling it.

I have no idea about the different models though, sorry. TheCake is right about feeding while laying down though, definitely make that a priority!

I got one second hand for £30 and have had at least that moneys worth from it already and am still only 30 weeks, its so comfy on my back and the footstool thing is gettiing a lot of use too!

They all seem to be of a muchness sizewise, if you look at them on ebay or all of the different brands they are roughly the same. Are you sure its your height causing the issue though or maybe the position you are trying to sit in? im 5inches taller than you and could comfortably sleep in mine!
