Round ligament pain - can anyone reassure me?

Hi,

I'm 10 + 5 weeks pregnant and for the past week I've been having some pretty strange sensations which I'm hoping are growing pains. I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and can offer some reassurance.

Basically if I wake up in the night my stomach often feels quite tender. I'm pretty certain that's trapped wind...Blush

Then at various times I'm getting the odd sharp pain. On Sunday I had it in my left ovary area. Today I've had it in my lower abdomen (centrally). It doesn't last long and goes almost immediately if I change position or rub it. Is this normal? I'm v nervous after a mc 6 months ago and would be so grateful if anyone could tell me they've felt the same and everything has turned out ok. Thanks in advance.

Pink really sorry to hear about your loss.

It sounds like wind and round ligament pain to me, although I'm no expert. Mine started at about ten weeks, and I was really worried too as we've had previous losses, plus I have quite a few other problems/complications. Mine felt like sharp pains down my sides and across my tummy, and sometimes where my legs met my torso, at the front if that makes sense? I spoke to my midwife about it and she referred me to my consultant, she was pretty sure it was just round ligament pain, but because of the other complications didn't want to take any chances.
Consultant confirmed that it was round ligament pain, along with just general growing and stretching pains. I'm 22+3 now and have just started getting something which my consultant describes as 'crotch lightening' Confused and that was really worrying me at first too, but apparently it's all completely normal. I should add that my complications are with me, not our baby, so the pains I had haven't been anything to worry about (touching wood it will continue this way!)

Hope this helps Smile

I also meant to say that it's probably worth a quick phone call to your midwife, or trip to the GP just to make sure everything is ok, but that might just be me being over-cautious Wink

Stars you are a star! Thank you so, so much for replying. It must be so lovely to be at 22 + 2. I've got a scan on Monday so I'll know then whether everything is alright.

Our posts crossed stars. You're right, I think I'll call my GP just to be on the safe side. I'm not feeling anything at all now. It only lasted for a couple of minutes on and off...

You're welcome, glad I could help Smile I really hope you have a lovely time at your scan, it is really amazing seeing the little bean jigging around! Thanks, it is nice, but I don't think I'll ever stop worrying lol, you get past one milestone and then another worry crops up, but I think the further you get the easier it gets to look on the positive side. Then they're born and you have a lifetime more of worrying about them Grin. Only joking. Really good luck, I hope everything goes really well for you Smile

Yep, I had those pains start at about 11 weeks I think. Sneezing was agony! I also remember one night in my sleep I turned on my tummy and thought my hips had exploded! They got a lot better after I popped at 16 weeks.

Now 31 weeks and ticking along nicely Smile but echoing all the others, please give the MW a call for reassurance.

Congratulations and fx for a healthy happy pregnancy.

Sorry, crossed posts again! Mine would only last a couple of minutes, sort of like the same intensity as the pain you get with a stitch if that makes sense. I still get round ligament pain now, and it's pretty uncomfortable, it is worrying though when you don't know what's normal, and I always panic at the first hint of pain and I straight away think the worst.

Pinkandwhite · 30/01/2014 18:21

Thanks v much stars! I know what you mean. I thought I'd stop worrying once I got passed when my mc happened (6+5 weeks). Now I think I'll stop worrying once I'm at 12 weeks but I bet I don't! I think you're right, it's just going to be a lifetime of worrying!

Thanks v much for replying lastonedancing. I'm glad all's going well with your pregnancy. It's so good to hear other people's experiences.

Stars - yes its so worrying when you don't know whats normal. I also immediately think the worst. I'm jealous of those people who go through pregnancy feeling certain that everything will be ok!

I've just spoken to a midwife who thinks it sounds perfectly normal. Fingers crossed.

I think it definitely does get easier the further along you get, I have a countdown app on my phone and sad as that sounds I find that really helps, as I know that as each day passes, the chances of something going wrong get lower and lower. Also, as our consultant keeps reminding me, even if you've had a mc before, you are far more likely to have a healthy pregnancy the next time, and it is extremely unlikely that anything bad will happen this time. It is hard though, I've sobbed through every scan (had four(!) so far due to my complications) as I've been so frightened that something will be wrong.

Still, I try to think one day at a time, and growing/round ligament pains are a good sign that things are developing, that's what I try to think about the pains! Grin

StarsInTheNightSky · 30/01/2014 18:36

That's great news pink! Grin onwards and upwards

Pinkandwhite · 30/01/2014 18:41

A countdown app is a great idea!

Sorry you've had complications. It'll all be worth it when your holding your newborn baby :-).

I try to think the same thing about the growing pains - hopefully they're a good sign. The midwife said that if another muscle in the body grew as quickly as the uterus does in pregnancy then you'd be in agony. It's the pregnancy hormones that make it bearable apparently.
