Baby bounces in and out of engagement

My baby won't stay engaged! It's my first. I'm 38w and my whole bump is one day high, next day low. He was low a few weeks ago but then came back up and I thought nothing of it. Then dropped again at the end of last week - we had a scan on Monday and the sonographer said is was engaged and was v unlikely to be coming back up.

But now all the kicks are higher again and saw the midwife this morning who reckons only 4/5! So barely in at all (and she really hurt me with all her prodding and wiggling Hmm).

I thought first babies were supposed to drop and stay there!! I guess this means he's not coming out any time soon...

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'm due today and having the same problem, my bump is so high! It did drop a few days ago but baby seems high again now. Last time I saw the midwife I was 4/5 too. Sorry, I know this doesn't really help you but it's my first too so it's nice to know I'm not the only one! Looks like I'm going overdue then.

It's so annoying! Can you actually go into labour if the head's not engaged?

I hope so! I think it can engage at the last minute or that's what I'm telling myself!

Yes you can go into labour if the baby isn't engaged. I did twice.

Expecting dc6 & this baby has been engaged since 35 weeks...now 3 days over due!

You can go into labour without baby engagingGrin, I did twice .
I'm 38.6 weeks with 3rd and this one is still very high and not engaged once( but I don't care this time as having a section on Monday )Wink

Mine seems to be in this pattern where he'll be low during the day and wriggle up at night - must be the way I'm sleeping? (36+5)

Also, isn't 4/5ths engaged almost all the way?

I'm not sure engagement has much of a bearing on when you'll go into labour.

Nah according to my green book notes 4/5 means four fifths of the head palpable so hardly engaged at all. I've had some stabby cervix pains today so hopefully he's thinking about moving down
